Not that surprising, just look at this thread, which is practically dead, and compare it to GOT on here, and WOT cost significantly more.

The book IP is massive but they pissed off too many of the fans with the changes they made.

The tragedy for this show is when it was made. There isn't actually any great secret of how to make a successful adaptation, and it has been done multiple times, stay faithful to the source material and only make changes due to time and different medium.

The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones (when they had books to follow), all followed this approach and succeeded massively. All the fantasy shows that didn't are crashing and burning. When the studios grow tired of gathering hundreds of millions of dollars into a pile and setting light to it, ala The Joker, then we might see a different approach once again.

The most important thing to realise is that a writer like J R Tolkien, George RR Martin and Robert Jordan is on a different plane to a Hollywood hack. You cannot simply put what they did onto the screen, that isn't adaption, but you better make damn sure that any changes you make are appropriate and approach their works like a humble apprentice learning from the master.

Dammit. Despite the changes and some odd casting decisions, I was thoroughly enjoying this

S3 was much improved I thought. The usual issue with writers who think they know better than the source material.

There are a few campaigns and petitions to save it.
