Essentially, he's a plumber, so he'll always be able to earn a decent living. There's endless work out there for installs and repairs domestical/ industrial as good engineers are hard to find and can also earn very good money themselves.

Spot on. The vast majority of folk don’t give two hoots about heat pumps and neither know nor care what they are. Also with their domestic boilers, they are aware of them only when they go wrong ( usually at the most inconvenient times). They are not in the pub discussing air pumps. Air con, on the other hand is of interest to small businesses and the owners of posh houses. Two respected heating engineers have informed me of this.
