I'll be giving it a miss, on the grounds that the original was one of the most ridiculous, gung ho, corny, excessively macho, typically American film I've ever seen, with the exception of Independence Day, which was even worse. Cringeworthy. I'm sure I'm alone in thinking this, in both cases.

Could have just said "I don't like action films!" which is fine, not everyone does, I don't enjoy horror films, brain out action films I do enjoy so I am looking forward to it.

Several great videos of how they actually shot it on YouTube. The actors were completely cut off once airborne and had to operate the cameras themselves, one of them hit record but accidently hit it again, they performed an hours worth of stuff, got back and realised nothing had been filmed!

Think I've seen the same video - Top Gun Maverick: How the Flying Scenes were Made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMbBh2CxUOw

Warning major spoiler and plot information: click and you will regret it, it’s for people who have seen the film….! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Irritated by the plot. We need to attack a facility by flying low along a valley canyon, heavily defended at speed, then drop bombs into a target area 3meters wide, oh and when Maverick attacks the laser pod malfunctions and he has to use his special ‘skills’ whilst calling on Goose to ‘talk to him’.

Ffs guys, the Star Wars plot has been done to death! Come up with something original!!!!

And what foreign country has fifth gen stealth fighters but no nuclear enrichment program? Who are we talking about here? Can’t you think of a plot that makes some sense? The ‘bad guy’ shouldn’t be some Bond like villain living in a mountain hideaway. If they have fifth gen super fighters then they are a major player and would have a nuclear program historically. And do you build a secret enrichment factory with no obvious infrastructure above ground and then put SAM sites all around it to show where it is? Take the lead from BB and build your ‘meth lab’ enrichment facility somewhere it won’t be obvious.

They should have gone with some new technology threat as a plot line.

Not enough 90s rock music in the soundtrack too.

End of the film stepped over the cheese fest line too far. Grow some balls, kill the main character. Or at least some of the ‘good guys’.

If replying to this please use spoiler tags.
That's not StarWars, it's 633 Squadron!

Going to our local Regal here in Sunny Akron, it’ll be the first time in over 40 years that I’ll be going on my own, my other half isn’t an action film fan.

Six hours to go so it gives me time to watch the original on my Sony OLED with 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos sound provided by my Denon amp and KEF speaker system…..

Somehow I reckon it’ll not sound quite as good as tonight….

"And what has a Phantom got to do with Top Gun?" I hear the pedants ask.... Well, remember in Top Gun 1 when 'Viper' recounts flying with Maverick's father back in 1965 over Vietnam? They were dogfighting in Phantoms, of course!
Tenuous, but a definite link...and anyway, who needs an excuse to sit in a Phantom? biggrin
When the US Fighter Weapons School opened in 1969, they were equipped F4 Phantoms as the combat aircraft. yesnerdread
Someone offers you an opportunity for a photo in the cockpit of an F-4 Phantom II outside a cinema, and you stop to try to forge a link with the Top Gun movie? Really?

I seem to remember that the FAST museum in Farnborough used to have a Phantom cockpit, or more likely a simulator cockpit, and you could sit in it and take control of some random Cessna on MS Flight Simulator while using the Phantom's controls. Not sure it lasted long. And it really was a trick missed not using Combat Flight Simulator to at least get "behind the stick" of some military jet or other.

It was a great film.

It wasn't quite as awesomely great as I wanted it to be and i'm not sure why but it's a very solid 8.5 outta 10 for me.

I don't think the following count as spoilers!

Downsides... no reference to Charlie at all.

No 'Lost that loving feeling'
I think you're confused. It was Maverick's dad who spent his working days fighting the Viet Cong...

Really enjoyed the first three quarters of that. I generally try and not think too much about the plot in an action movie as they rarely make too much sense, but credulity was somewhat stretched by the last 20-30mins or so. Anyway, lots of nice little throwbacks, the 911 was hot, and the whole thing is beautifully shot.

Missus is very keen to see this. We haven’t been to the cinema together for ages so I might treat us to some posh seats and get myself a great big portion of crunchy nachos and munch them all the way through just to p!ss off the poor sods sat in front of us.

If you can’t beat em, join em!

No-one is going to hear your nachos over F-18's, Tomcats and "fifth generation fighters".

Just booked our tickets for tomorrow night. I was quite surprised to find that not a single seat had been booked for the 8:40PM showing.

Really looking forward to it.

Awesome film. Took my 10 year old to see it this afternoon smile

In an era where every film is depressing, it’s nice to have a “feel good” one. Hopefully the start of a move away from the mostly miserable dark crap we’ve endured the past decade.

As if the military would keep referring to them by that description, not a code name designation.

I get that they had to educate the masses. But once. Please.

Good graphics on the bogey plane though, not like the old film, what did they use….? F5 s?
