Probably the best US TV series ever.

Without taking anything away from BoB (which I think is great), what about The Wire, The Shield, The Sopranos etc...

Don't like any of that....never watch American ste as a rule.

Maybe narrow minded, but I wont be convinced otherwise. wink

One of the best things i have ever seen on TV. Watching the final disc of interviews after the series brinngs a tear to this grown man's eye.

I have the tin, but I've ordered it on Blu-Ray now. The cinematography justifies it.

Fairy nuff.

For me, the most memorable part of BoB is when they find the concentration camp. Really powerful stuff. A great series overall.

There was rumour of HBO doing a British Airborne series to accompany Band of Brothers...

Now that would be magnificent!
They are, however, producing a Pacific series to be shown next year.

Also is Band of Brothers not due out on Blu-Ray soon?

The Wire was fabulous. I enjoyed every minute from start to finish.

Rome was another superb HBO series (partly in collaboration with the Beeb) even if they took licence with the known story.

Deadwood was another one mixing true historical figures and events with modern story-telling. That was utterly engaging and secured Mr Lovejoy as a very flexible, believable actor in my eyes.

But back to BoB which was one of the greatest TV series ever. It really brought home the differences in their lives back then and ours now, notleast the clothing they had. The episode in Bastogne made me feel cold, even though I had read up on the series and KNEW it was filmed in a warehouse with paper for snow, and that the visible vapour in their breathing was added post production. I just imagined being there, in those conditions, today but wearing modern outdoor clothing. It *still* mkes me feel cold. My Grandad and his peers had life much much tougher than we do today.

Incidentally, you may be interested to know that Damien Lewis is in another TV series called "Life" which was just started airing on British TV. It's a cop-drama but quirky and so far (I'm caught-up with the US viewing thanks to downloads) very worthwhile. It's a lot less serious in tone than BoB (obviously) but Damien plays a credible American again (at least, he does to my British ears).

Only if your Grandad was American.

The Brits in and around Bastogne were much better equipped and prepared for winter, and at the very least had the benefit of one hot meal a day.

In addition, the Americans didn't rotate frontline units for rest/refit/relaxation like the British or the Germans did - they operated like the Russians. I think Easy Company of the 501 PIR were in contact with the enemy for 94 consecutive days in late 1944. The British rotated every 21 days.

Not so different to today. British troops in Afghanistan are often in the field 80 or more days in close contact with the Taliban. Not much better supplied either.

I meant it more generally - the better equipment available to us today - than relating specifically to the events at Bastogne.

Watched the series when it originally aired back in 2001/2002?

Got the tin box set as soon as it came out, cost me much more than £20 lol!

All in all its a great series, well written, and the special effects are very good. The colour saturation is great.

Damien Lewis did very well, along with all the other british cast members. Damien Lewis was also the guest host of one of the Have I Got News for You shows.

And, as also been mentioned, he is also in that new Life program. He was also in an old Victorian program too, can't remember what it was called.

Back to BOB, what made it more interesting was at the end of the series when you found out that the chaps talking at the beginning of the show were the soldiers the series was based on. Amazing!

Absolutely tremendous series, I have it on DVD. Some top drawer acting, and an amazing soundtrack courtesy Michael Kamen.
