Not sure if it counts as "war film" and don't know if it's been mentioned already but I like Zero Dark Thirty.

Sorry to do this but not remotely true story not even close
Even compared to the book scenes were added or made up. He didn’t kill mustafa for example he’s only mentioned in his book briefly that there is a guy called mustafa they are looking for. The film makes it a revenge story, again not true. Firefights added for drama etc too there was no reward for him...
His book also is in doubt to a point , a proven liar ( in court) known for embellishing which is a real shame because no doubt he didn’t need to do that at all. Even lied about medals he didn’t get.
Yeah, that fantacist tried to get a bump by dragging Ventura into his fabrications, he wrote a decent novel by all accounts, but was a bit of a snide. Ventura did get paid out, though not by the blokes widow. Eastwood is good for taking a tiny sliver of truth and making great films though.

'A Town like Alice.' 1956 Neville Shute

British women prisoners forced to march miles by the Japanese in steamy jungles dropping like flies.
Helped by Aussie guy who nearly gets killed as a result.
Great lump in the throat reunion in the final seconds after it's all over..

Feels a bit like the inspiration for 'Tenko' perhaps some of the actresses might have been in both
Now that's an excellent war film, it was on a week ago. I taped it. Not rewatched it yet, but I have good memories of it. After Odette/Carve Her Name with Pride recently, I am waiting for the right mood.

I remember that film, made at the time of the soviets in afghan, I thought it was really good. One of not many mainstream films about that war.

True as in there was a court case

But it’s total fiction, he’s made out to be sympathetic when it’s apparently completely opposite and the guy deserved all he got by all accounts I read. It’s many moons ago so memory might be bad.
I think he was a really complicated chap. I keep meaning to read the bloke by the lawyer but apparently it's hard work and going by the reviews, not great.

I do remember watching an interview on yt with the last person alive that actually met him. Worth having a look for.

The Way Ahead.

1942 (?) B&W British film that shows how a group of civilians are turned into a fighting unit and then go into action. With David Niven, Peter Ustinov and lots of other faces you’ll recognise.

It’s on You Tube and I bet you have a lump in your throat at the end.

If anybody does find it and likes it, please let me know. I think it’s a fantastic film.
Niven was at that point a serving officer, but the WD thought he might be best utilised making morale-boosting films. It's also a bit of propaganda for the Territorials - Niven's character is a Terrier and the storyline shows how effective he can be in a front-line situation.

It's a real "Don't mess with us, Jerry" sort of film. I also love it.

Pesty I have no particular issue with a little dramatic embellishment, it’s a Clint Eastwood film after all.

But the core story of four tourS, shot twice, silver star and killed helping veterans is true.

I don’t care whether he punched Ventura or not, interesting that no damages were ever paid.

His wiki page deals with the medals issue, The core of the story is true.

Either way, it’s a damm fine film.
Absolutely. The core is.

+1

Excellent and much underrated film. I especially liked the idea of mad Russians making hooch from brake fluid

Valkyrie.[2008]

Good film, not sure how accurate it is though, and whether we should regard the plotters
as heroes at all, they were still committed Nazis, they wanted rid of Hitler, not
because he was a fruitloop mad hatter but because he was a lousy military commander
and was losing Germany the war.

One you perhaps haven't heard of. The King's Choice, a Norwegian film telling the story of the German Invasion of Norway. - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4353996/

Trailer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNtu-bCGi18

Scene with the German Heavy Cruiser Blücher leading a naval fleet up the Oslofjord at night with all lights off to start the invasion by attacking Oslo. The only defence is the Oscarsborg Fortress armed with German 11" naval guns built by Krups in 1893 and an underwater torpedo battery that the Germans didn't know about. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ79i11JSnU put the subtitles on.

They actually fired the original Oscarsborgs guns for that scene.
On BBC4 (and iPlayer) now.

Ps. and that is Mr White from the Bond movies playing the King.

Great film.
If we're allowed sci-fi then 'On the beach' is well worth a watch.

The name reminds me of a superb film that is rarely on TV - 36 Hours.

It stars James Garner, Rod ? (Australian actor who was in The Time Machine) and Eva Marie Saint. It's the story of one of the Overlords who is captured by the Nazis and their attempts to make him give up the location of the D-Day landings.
