Without giving away the basic plot, what is the general theme of the series? I have always been interested in the 1920s/30s gangster era of the USA
It's basically that. Bootlegging, but with the twist that the main character involved is a local 'councillor' or somesutch, and his brother is the town 'sheriff' who is involved (and therfore obviously corrupt).

Are the characters based on real gansters and politicians of that era or are they purely ficticious?
Ficticious as far as I know, although they've shoehorned in a young Al Capone, as a trainee/small time gangster/driver. Not sure on the historical accuracy of this element however. The atmosphere of the show is very good indeed, and if that specific era holds a particular interest for you, you would probably enjoy this.

I believe that Nucky is based on someone called Nucky Johnson. The atmosphere of the show is very good indeed, and if that specific era holds a particular interest for you, you would probably enjoy this.

Capone started life as a runner, bouncer, book-keeper and general gofer for one of the big time New York hoodlums, Frank Yale and later Chicago based Jo Collisimo.
Staggering the amount of money he made from bootlegging and the prohibition era as a whole, in todays money equates to something like $1 billion a year his firm was raking in.Nucky is the chief treasurer of Atlantic City (a place under used in the mafia genre, what with Vegas/New York/New Jersey/Chicago getting all the stories) and I find it fresh. Showing light on how thing worked in that town.
I didn't even recognise Dabney Coleman the first few times I saw him, think is a great actor

Nucky was a 'true' character with a name change (he was was really called Enoch "Nucky" Johnson, and not Thompson as per the show - Atlantic City was the home of anti-prohibition activities, so a mafia centre. Al Capone is in the series as a young runner, I believe there's some truth in that. Also Lucky Luciano is shown early on (the fiery guy, can't remember what his pool playing boss was called), who went on to be one of the main mafioso in the US.The atmosphere of the show is very good indeed, and if that specific era holds a particular interest for you, you would probably enjoy this.
