Illustration on the note looks like a dog turd, how appropriate.

This in bucket loads. I met a Zim couple who used to farm rabbits. They fled after their farm was reclaimed. Both sons were murdered, daughter was raped and murdered; they fled with just the clothes they were wearing. A farmer local to me who had known them for donkeys years put them up. The stories they recounted were pretty horrific.

White farmers with the skills and knowledge to run viable businesses were forced out, farms became unviable, the black people they employed became unemployed. The country became an economic basket case thanks to Mugabe.

Edited to add according to current news feed Mugabe has until midday on monday to resign, otherwise he will be forced out. Thought I'd never see the day.
Friend of mines parents had a 2.5k hectare farm taken off them. And then run into the ground as no one knew how to properly run it. They stay in the hope they can get it back one day

It's just something we could never imagine, although when I first moved to NZ there were a few of the things that Moari were allowed that puzzled me.

The Maori were treated badly by the early European settlers in NZ, and hence have some protections.

Yes, nice chap.

Some of you've clearly forgotten the purge of white farmers he carried out in the early 2000s.

And then went on to declare that the killers should not be prosecuted.

He was also an out and out racist. Just read some of his famous quotes.

Focusing on his white-bashing risks overlooking even more serious crimes, e.g. getting the North Koreans to train the 5th Brigade in how to suppress domestic opposition, then letting them loose on the Ndebele to kill thousands of civilians.

Ditto. One of my great-aunts moved to Zim after the war to establish a chunk of my family outside Bulawayo, farming, game ranch, a lawyer/accountant. The farm got "invaded" (and by an enormous fluke I was there at the time, which was interesting) but they managed to come to an accommodation that allowed the business to keep ticking over. As the economy collapsed the younger generation and those in the professions emigrated to South Africa and the UK. But in the last 5 years quite a few of my younger cousins have returned to Zim to take on the farms.

Zim's population is quite well educated, the court system survives, the idea of constitutional politics is still strong (hence why Mugabe always felt compelled to hold elections to seek legitimacy). It has always had the capacity to turn itself around. It needs a political catalyst. The MDC failed to deliver it. Heaven knows, it seems unlikely that Zanu-PF are going to intentionally reform the place even after Mugabe leaves, but perhaps once their great figurehead is removed, people will see that Zanu-PF isn't all-powerful and the opposition will have another go.

The feckin meme has been going longer than Mugabe. I'd rather see it condemned to the dustbin of history biggrin

A 'road map' has been agreed with Mugabe.

In other words, he's just bought himself a st load more time to evade impeachment.

Apparently we're drinking the expensive wine tonight. The other half is Zimbabwean so wants to celebrate smile

In all seriousness though, there's so much apprehension about what's going to happen now, just because he's gone, doesn't mean it's going to get better, the ruling party is still there, only time will tell.
