I felt personally that the Hurricane, Spitfire and Lighting are more representive of a fight for freedom from external oppression.

However, a Vulcan would be more historically relavent. smile

The challenge is this.

Raise the Union Flag on this building.
The British Army did occupy Buenos Aires briefly during 1806-07 but was forced to surrender to the Spaniards.

The Argentines still apparently have the two Army and two Royal Navy colours that they captured.

The obvious answer is that if they WANT to train on British soil they can stay on British soil during the Olympics. Enjoy your commute chaps. Might want to set your alarms for 5:30 instead of 6:00 though. It's a long way.

Words only. Ad agencies love a bit of controversy.

Has he fired the people that did this (if it was so unacceptable)? I mean, selling it to the Argentine government. What did they think it would be used for exactly?

Or how about donating the fees from the ad to Help for Heroes (or similar) in support of his apology?

it might be an advert but it's not exactly 'offensive' is it? Some argentinians think the Falklands belong to Argentina... that's not offensive, is it? It's just wrong. people need to get over themselves. Stop being offended and start not caring.

Your point has some merit - it is wrong just like that awful advert on "road safety" a few years ago that showed a car with its front wheels locked and rear wheels turning hitting a child with the usual "speed kills" rubbish.

However, unlike that, this is a deliberate national insult. It's also politicising the Olympics (wouldn't be the first time, of course).

The steps he is exercising on are a war memorial. I think that is fairly offensive.

It really really isn't. If anything it shows the Argentinians as impotent whingers. An apt response would be to send them a video of some Morris Dancers draped in Union Flags in Port Stanley. Those who can, do. Those who can't, make ineffectual poncey videos.

And just like in 1982 when it did Argentina a huge favour by leading to the fall of the junta, the 1806-7 actions led directly to Argentina's declaration of independence from Spain. They really should write us a nice thank you letter.

Most of the Latin American battles of independence against the Spanish were won with the help of the British: after the Napoleonic wars many British soldiers signed up for the 'Albion Battalion' that fought its way up and down the Andes and across the continent from the Atlantic to the Pacific. At sea the war of independence against the Spanish was led by Admiral Lord Cochrane, another Brit. There are a few streets and a museum named after Cochrane in Chile, but apart from that the British contribution has been mostly forgotten.

If the Argentines wish to have some British soil in the Falkland’s by running over graves then I think we should accommodate them.

In much the same way as one Russian general recalled what became known as the Winter War against Finland.

“Despite having every possible advantage against the Finn’s, we barely captured enough land to bury all our dead”

A serious question for the PH legal types; IIRC, isn’t there some old law against desecrating graves?

There was one about ‘harassing a preacher’. If you can’t question a preacher then surely there must be something about graves?

It would be lovely to see the disrespectful Argentine athlete spending the duration of the Olympics at Her Majesty’s pleasure.

All I know (possibly all I am allowed to say as an official secrets act signee) is that I have done a small piece of work on the only flying Lancaster left.

I loved my work experience...
