As a regular on the First Great Western route I can only offer my condolences to those using the West Coast Main Line. FGW charge the earth for everything from rail fares to parking (£20 for 12 hours at Reading) and offer the lowest possible service.

Such a shame, Virgin seemed to run it ok, and it looks like change for change sake.

Went on one of the first Pendolino services, was rather strange on a tilting train.

Last time we went on one, it was some bargain ticket, £9 from London to Manchester Airport,(Virgin and the local service) guess there won't be any tickets like that again.

Sounds dangerously like the National Express East Coast fiasco... Shame that Virgin lost the bid, used to use their trains a fair bit and the service was always decent and prices seemed fairly reasonable.

Don't get me started on First Group.

As a long standing traveller on their service into Paddington, I am one of the many forced to endure the disgusting contempt they show their customers.

I am a mild mannered, laid back kind of guy, but First Group has taken me to the brink of a mental melt down on numerous occasions.

First Group is cynically managed to the lowest common denominator. I would find it hard to even shake the hand of a First Group executive. In spite of the propaganda they pump out, they are deeply unpopular with commuters.

I know of many people who chose to move house to a different town in order to stop being obliged to use them. I did.
That's how bad they are.

This is very bad news indeed.

Shame that virgin lost it, the franchise system doesn't seem to help the rail users.

i fail to see how a company paying the government more for a franchise will somehow forward lower train tickets to its passengers

its a shame the virgin network was bang on - i loved travelling to london on the trains

however like many i've heard of the awful service of the first group including from many people who work for them. i cant see how this is a step forward.

Unbelievable.

When Virgin first took on the WCM, they were crap. Utterly crap. Fair play to them however, after the first cpl of yrs they really drove forward to up their game. In the last 10 yrs they have really put down a very good service. I dont find the prices too bad, the staff are good and the train service has been effective.

And well directed.

And yes, I've been known to lurk in 'that' bit of PH.

Not everyone sees "geek" as being a pejorative term.

Given some of the rude and insulting stuff you've posted in the past Eric, either learn to take it if you dish it out, or wind your neck in.
