The whole nub of this is that once you're arrested in connection with something like this, as a public figure then you're finished. No one will hire a broadcaster, TV presenter or similar ever again after this, even if the accusations prove to be completely baseless. The accuser has the benefit of total anonymity whilst the accused will have his life entirely destroyed, even if acquitted. I'd imagine if the accusations levelled against MC prove not to be true, he will for one be pushing very hard for a statute giving anonymity to the accused in cases like this.

the accusers clearly have nothing to lose, anyone is fair game.
Not true as shown in the following article:

This sums it up perfectly.

Whilst I'm inclined to agree it doesn't seem to have done Craig Charles' career any long term damage. Although I'm sure he's the exception rather than the rule.

Why all this gnashing of teeth? The alternative to 'public information' is some form of secret arrest. Would you really want that?

"Met" him pushes it a bit far but I've exchanged pleasantries with him a few times, shared a room with him and have colleagues who have properly met him and dealt with him on a charitable works basis. I thought he was nothing but nice and those colleagues have reported the same. I admire his charity and his committment to his daughter. I don't mind his professional side either to be honest (although many of his clients I doubt I'd like).

So Max Clifford, a man who was the subject of a Louis Theroux programe, is arrested on suspicion of committing sexual offences. Recently Jimmy Saville, another subject of a Louis Theroux programme, is outed as a sexual predator. Neil and Christine Hamilton were arrested on suspicion of rape during the filming of a Louis Theroux programme.

Am I the only one spotting a pattern? Who else has he made a show about?
Didn't he do one about the Church of Scientology?

If so then that would be a bit of a coup

Was it was you who made the allegations?

I said pleasantries. (That isn't a euphemism).

And therein lies the conundrum. Do we have secret arrests and a press that is banned from reporting facts or do we have a free press and a police/politicians who know that if they do something, someone can tell tales? Rhetorical of course. The irony is that Clifford deals in myth and spin and here he is nailed by, what is apparently, a fact: his arrest.

Why does he have moral questions to answer? He deals with the Press, they have no morals or scruples, so neither does he.
I know a few journalists. To suggest they have no morals is wrong. They have rules that most abide by despite them not being compusory. They have scruples.

My job used to include giving out press briefings once the PT dept went home. I once asked that a name, that I was obliged to give under orders, should not be released and I gave the reasons. No media outlet released the name.

If there are weak/non-existant controls or discipline arrangements there will always be a certain level of corruption. Yet the majority of the press follows professional standards despite there being virtually no penalty for not doing so.

When started to edit a magazine my son, a journo on ITN, gave me a book of his on the morals of his profession. In general they are complied with yet there is no punishment for failing to do so.

Indeed I always find it amusing how people can have a hatred for people they have never actually met or had anything to do with ( Tony Blair and Gordon Brown accepted)

Until Guilt is confirmed yes, given the impact upon a person of such an accusation even if acquitted.

Paul Daniels and John Craven next. I get the impression that Max is the kind of guy who will not go down quietly, indeed I think he will 'sing like a canary' if charged and if I'm right there will be a few squeaky backsides out there tonight.

What was Mr Mouna thinking? Or was wearing a paper bag over his head part of the fun?

Thought that was one of the original problems.
