The 24kg or so of coke they tried to smuggle is worth what? £3m?

How much do you reckon it costs to actually produce? A few hundred £?

These guys can afford to lose £1m private jets to make shipments and still earn incredible sums of money.

Cocaine is ridiculously cheap if you’re on the source end – what we end up with is 0.5g with a blend of novacane, speed & cocaine. In that 0.5g, how much do you think is coke? My guess would be about 0.2g max… £50 for 0.2g of pure cocaine.

You do the maths. smile

According to "something I one read on t'interweb' coke is about as expensive as paracetomol to produce.

It ends up being expensive because of the huge cost of transport and the massive risk based markup.

Reason I ask is if the 2 girls were innocent why didn't they tell someone before they got caught
That is precisely the problem with their "case".

There is a theory that they are decoys, or part of a corrupt deal, ie we give you a couple of mules you can splatter all over the news to back up your winning the war on drugs, while you look the other way , as our private plane/boat smuggles 10/20 millions worth.

As for these two hopefully there story will give a few other idiots pause for thought.
The same method is used in illegal gambling in South East Asia. Every now and then there's a little show put on by the ones that control the gambling and the authorities. There will be a couple of dummies put into a flat with a pile of cash and evidence of gambling, the police have been told to turn up and make the bust. The bust is made, the media get a story and the gambling continues elsewhere. Same story with counterfeit goods, there are shopping centres all over the place filled to the rafters with the stuff. Every now and then there's a bust which virtually everyone is warned about. A little "stock" (and a few more dummies) are left out, te police come to collect and within 30 mins business is back on.

This is just two very naive young girls who very likely saw a few too many films and thought they'd be living the high life that they'd no doubt been treated to prior to getting cuffed. Safe to say it hasn't been going as they'd hoped. I feel sorry for the parents in this case, the girls should have thought about who they were hanging around with a little more..

I'm guessing that Midnight Express wasn't one of them...

ETA I'll let them off Bankok Hilton as they are likely too young to have even heard of that Mini Series.

ETFA: Wiki is also wrong in that it was also aired in the UK as I very much remember watching it.

Coincidently Sky showed Midnight Express last night. Only watched 10mins - looked depressing.

How many stories about "innocent" and supposedly "fooled" or "coerced" young British citizens do we have to see plastered on the news before others get it. I'm not buying it.

Kidnapped and forced to go to Peru? How did the "kidnappers" get them from Ibiza to Peru without arousing suspicion? And if they had some sort of secret flight arrangement to get them there, why not use that secret flight to bring the drugs back without having to kidnap 2 drugs mules to smuggle stuff on a commercial flight?

If they did go out on a commercial flight without their kidnappers but under threat of something happening to them, surely there would be plenty opportunity to raise the alarm?

It just doesn't add up. Sounds like they've gone out there willingly to smuggle drugs to get extra cash to continue living in Ibiza for the summer, and got caught.

You can see the conversation now.

“See lov, a few weeks in Peru for free to see the sights then a couple of hours risk and we’re home and dry my girl! We’ll pocket the money and get back over here and put it down on a nice little villa just out of town Carlos said he knows we can have for cheap. We’ll set up a little business over the winter to be ready for the 2014 season and then we’ll be set. We can even get Shaz and Debbie to come over and help us out.”

“Me Mudder will be well proud!”

“Sure she will Minnie, and all for a few hours of risk. Anyway even if we get caught we’ll just tell everyone we were forced to do it. Much easier over there than Bangkok you know and we’ll be back home before Christmas. Hell I’m sure that we can the poor little bleeding hearts will set up something to get us out and Carlos has said he can always bribe a few people to get us out.”

Perhaps their legal peeps should tell them that You Can’t Hurry (Peruvian justice) Love and it will be more than just One More Night in the cells for them and far from Just Another Day In Paradise. It’s Against All Odds that Mama will be able to help much and whatever the out come they had best hope that they don’t feel anything In The Air Tonight as it could be an Easy Lover interested in showing them a new Groovy Kind Of Love between Two Hearts. They had also best be aware that they are likely to find themselves living Separate Lives as the authorities put them into different parts of the prison
