The obvious choice would be the Alfa 3.0 24v V6 as used in some of the Lancia Stratos replicas (Hawk ?). Keeping it Italian. Even better with a set of down draught throttle bodies to replace the plenum (look at AH motorsport).

As has been suggested the Mondeo ST220 is a good starting point, a version of this is used in the Noble M12 with turbos if you need more umph.

A more modern alternative is the 3.5l Toyota lump as use in the Evora/Exige, there are companies out there doing transplants into the MR2 so some good knowledge out there.

Cheap and dirty would be a MX6/Probe 2.5l KLDE engine with the "clairetoo" triumph throttle body kit (do a search), a health 200hp with good noise plus it is all alloy and pretty light/small.

thats true, its an option. but is a fair bit heavier than 4cyl (about 150kg vs 100)

was thinking, the r500 had about 230 bhp from 1.8 k series. How?

I initially read that and thought, that it didnt sound correct, but it was the 3.2 that i was thinking about. it does appear that the 3.0 was the last Italian one, with the 3.2 being a derivative of the GM High Feature V6, and being made in Melbourne Australia.

VHPD head, ported, throttle bodies, forged pistons, custom map, 4-2-1 exhaust and probably a bit more besides!

And bored out to 2.0l iirc and very marginal on emissions, has one after me when I sva'd my fury. Factory built and only just oassed after running it down the riad to heat up the cat. There was also a customer 200hp duratec Caterham in the line, both company drivers preferred the duratec and said it was faster on the road.

Throttle bodies are rollers as well.

so 230 bhp k series in the light weight (kevlar body option) de Havilland, sounds like a good combination

Has to be an Italian V6 surely ? The noise is part of the Dino.
