What they want is reparations for slavery, paid by people who are not slavers to people who are not slaves.

We should tell them we will pay up when we receive similar compensation (plus interest) from the Italians, the Irish, the Scandinavians, the Tunisians and the Moroccans.

Should i expect my German friend to apologise about Hitler next time she pops round for a drink?

Should i apologise to some of my mates for slavery as i am a white man?

Should the GB ask for reparations after helping to defeat the Nazi's in WW2?

They may wish to consider suing the many African nations who procured the slaves and handed them over to the white chaps with ships.....

Total load of bks. When I look at things like this I think of Germany or even East an West did they manage to pull themselves up after years of strife (WW1 WW2 East annexation etc) so how long since slavery finished 100 years 200 years (I don't know). In that time did pee get to move to the west as part of the commonwealth were they free to export skills and wealth back to Jamaica etc.

If they are genuinely concerned about slavery they should direct their attentions towards what goes on in Saudi today, seems to be not a million miles away.

And I'm sure all those descendants are just having a terrible time in the sunny blue water surrounded Caribbean island of Jamaica and would all rather be back in their African homeland fighting, ebola, typhoid, droughts and civil wars.

I'm not surprised they are after compensation for that.

But how much are they going to give us?

I belive wrt your last point that the Allies (including GB) got significant reparations in the form of patents and copyrights etc. I may be wrong.

No reparation without repatriation

Please note this isn't a racist comment but now people are able to travel around the world I am not noticing a mass emigration to Jamaica, perhaps the descendants prefer this lifestyle.

If we have bettered their lifestyle perhaps the Jamaicans should be paying us for increasing their life opportunities.

This crossed my mind when I heard of this story yesterday.

It does seem odd in these cases that 1 group wants an apology (and money) from another group, over actions that neither of them were involved with.

A fair compromise would appear for the UK to free herself of the current residual vestiges of the Old Empire in our current constitution, apologise for offence caused and save ourselves a fair few quid in restitution

The point is that for most of us plebs, we got nothing from slavery. Ten years after its abolition there were Irish dying due to the potato famine, and 15 years before that there were people starving in the hedgerows of this country. What should not be forgotten was that at the same time when money and power was flooding into this country from the slave trade, the English/Welsh (could not find the rate for Scotland) death rate from starvation and poor diet was higher than for the Irish potato famine, and that was rather high.

We - that is those in Ireland and those in England/Wales - were victims as much as anyone. I am quite happy to pay back the benefits my family got from the slave trade.

King Tegbesu (of Bennin as is now) made £250,000 a year selling people into slavery in 1750. King Gezo said in the 1840's he would do anything the British wanted him to do apart from giving up slave trade:

"The slave trade is the ruling principle of my people. It is the source and the glory of their wealth . . . the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery . . ."

It is a complex subject but whilst there are arguments that some of the poor benefited in some ways, for the majority it meant nothing other than reinforcing the gap between the rich and poor with regards power and influence.
