Likewise - I grew up listening to Bowie (Changesone remains a permanent fixture in the multichanger) and was hoping this was fake.

Very sad.

Very sad, 69 is no age these days really.

You are right but if half of what has been written about his lifestyle and habits is true, some would say he has had a good run.

I love his music and he was a truly exceptional one from a era of many standout performers, not like todays manufactured ones.

Really upset. Never was innovative and legend more appropriate.

My 20s and 30s had his soundtrack to it.

Laughing Gnome and Ground Control. Hunger and Labyrinth. And fashion leader.

I had conversations with my wife and other friends on his music and films.

Undefinable.

Another shocking death in the world of music. Stars don't come much bigger and brighter than Bowie. Thanks for the tunes man.

I've just looked at his filmography in IMDB. 452 soundtrack credits.

Looking at his discs: there are so many that sort of defined a time. Heroes is on at the moment on TV. I'd forgotten so many of his great tracks. As someone mentions their favourite on TV I keep thinking: Loved that. But there are so many.

I join the list of PH atheists & pray that Bowie rests forever in the loving embrace of our Holy Lord.

The world is a poorer place today and Britain is in particular.

This country isn't perfect, but I genuinely think and artist like Bowie could never have emerged from any other country. That combination of genuine talent, a desire to constantly move out of comfort zones, always wanting to be different. Only in Britain or maybe new York, could someone like that emerge from.

We've lost musical legends before, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley. But Elvis was doing in 1976 the same stuff he was doing in 1956. You put on any Marley album, and you know exactly what style of music you're about to hear. You can't say that about Bowie. 40+ years of constant innovation.

Sad news. Wouldn't call myself a massive fan but did see him play a Glastonbury and it was the highlight of the festival for me that year. They were playing loads of his stuff on the radio this morning and you realise that you know/like more of his stuff than you realise and what an amazing artist he was. Got a bit of dust in my eye the car this morning.

RIP David Bowie - a true music legend.

I still remember seeing him on TV for the first time. It would have been 1972 and I was 13. My reaction was "What the.....?

To be honest, all through my teens, which coincided with Bowie's most influential and dramatic period, I could never claim that I was a huge fan of what he did or his music. In many ways, the various images he cultivated and presented seemed scary in some respects. However, as I got older I came to appreciate him more and more.

Saw him play in 72 at the Top Rank Doncaster, Ziggy Stardust, made a huge impression on me. Remained a favourite of mine throughout my life. RIP The Man Who Sold The World

First LP I ever bought was Hunky Dory. Guess I would have been about 9 or 10. Life On Mars? became my favourite song of all time, and still is 45 years later.

Sad news, only saw his advert for his new album on tele on Friday. He didn't look well but I had no idea he was actually so ill...

BBC radio 2 were very slow with this news this morning. They finally announced it at 7.18, 45 odd minutes after others started talking about it. 10 minutes later they were playing a very highly produced tribute track.

So to me it sounded like they thought it was another hoax, and then when they realised it was true, they had a pre-produced tribute ready to play.

Sara Cox said "as DJ's we frequently have the honour and privilege of announcing momentous news on Radio 2..... Davis Bowie is dead".... (or very similar words)

No emotion or sadness in her voice.... very weird.
