I fail to see a morality issue? If he was assaulted the perpetrators should be treated the same way as had they assaulted anyone else. If it is proven to be politically or sexually motivated, same rules apply. I feel the same about the oafs who threw milkshakes at farage and co, a cake at Clarkson, an egg at Prescott. Why should people get a pass because their victims are divisive characters?

I've added bold. You've pointed to issues of conscience, not the law. Just because someone thinks Jones could do with a bit of a slap doesn't mean they think the perpetrator shouldn't get done for it.

Regarding the veracity of the whole thing, I can't imagine he'd be stupid enough to make the entire thing up after the Jessie Smollett case.

If the CCTV doesn't back up his story and he's found to have lied, exaggerated and wasted everybody's time, I can't see there being much enthusiasm from the powers that be, to bring him to task.

What likely happened is some moron had a few too many and thought it would be funny to run over and kick him. As anyone who's been on a night out will attest, there are people out there who will resort to violence because they think it's funny. Still not acceptable of course, but only in Owen's mind was it a brutal assault from the far right.
