Why do some people so enjoy killing off the better threads ?
It's not for enjoyment, and it's no accident. There really are concerted efforts to control information and discussion on the internet. Wikipedia articles get gatekeeper'd, activists stuff political threads with crap to make it tedious to read, or just to keep unwanted facts off the last pages etc., etc.

I can't get why more than 200000 EU citizens a year might even want to come to the UK if Brexit is such a bad move............

So using the term "it could be argued" isn't an invitation to discussion, its a statement. OK.
I never said that part was the statement. You made that up.

'It could be argued' if you are terminally stupid and obsessed with race.

This was the statement.

It demonstrably doesn't favour white Europeans over anyone else.

It favours citizens of member states over anyone else. As it should. Club favours club members over non-members shocker.

You're both right. Yes it favours citizens of member states over anyone else - that is in no doubt - but as a secondary effect (as the majority of EU member states are white European/Slavic etc.) then it does favour this sub-group of demography.

Now when you look at the actual politicos in charge - Commissioners and other unelected bureaucrats high up in the ether that is the EU, then it is incredibly male and white. Ironically, UKIP is many times more diverse that the EU as a political institution. Heck even the France's FN is more diverse - it's weird juxtaposition of post-neoliberal politics that the actual 'fascists' are the ones in suits telling people not to vote for the fascists!

Just like the African Union that has preferential deals with primarily black countries.

Slavic nations represent very much minority in the composition of EU.

As for elected and unelected officials, high up, being incredibly male and white;

The point was, and still is; colour was/is completely irrelevant. Only in the head of someone obsessed with race would that matter. To say 'it could be argued that it's racist' is so stupid, almost at the level of people saying 'oh it could be argued that homoeopathy cured my dog'.

At any rate, this is a thread about Merkel, who, according to many posters, actually runs EU, whose popularity seems rather high considering that she is about to stand for the third time.

To the ignorant uneducated reader - ie me - what JJ is saying is technically correct.

The point just needs to be made and the thread move on.

It's not surprising her popularity is so high, she's doing a good job.

I think some of the resentment of her (on here) is purely because she is doing such a good job especially at holding the EU together when they want to see it fail....

The overall result of the current policies will be a disaster for Germany and the rest of the Eurozone countries, Germany is having a massive boom but if they continue on this path its going to be one hell of a bust.

The only way to stop this is to run the currency as it should be, that will be politically and fiscally painful for the Germans. I don't see Merkel doing anything apart from riding it out until the st hits the fan.

I'm not really up on German Politics but the AFD appear to be making a lot of gains recently.

And whilst Merkels approval rating has rallied a bit since Christmas its still roughly 20 points down from the high in 2014

RE holding the EU together.

Yep, she is doing that. And obviously it works for the German economy (currently anyway) But I am baffled as to why other countries are OK with it though.

In slightly unrelated news read a piece on another website about a American chap who met some Germans. Chatting turned to Politics with the German guy fully supportive of Merkels open door policy on immigrants. Globalism is perfect etc

The American countered it and the German guy seemingly had a melt down. And spilled another point of view! eek

Essentially Germans now are indoctrinated that because Hitler did terrible things. They must never speak ill of immigrants, that if they say anything bad about immigrants they can go to prison. They are basically guilt tripped and it's gone so far that they can't stop it! And with Merkel in charge it's unlikely to ever be reset to anything approaching normal.

I am very pleased. Merkel's mask has slipped, they could choose to meet their NATO obligations - but don't (Trump like a stopped clock etc..) and if by including the UK & BREXIT in her speech she is supporting the fact that Theresa May is only giving conditional support to Germany/EU then that's great news!

She's wrong of course, but Trump and Brexit are great opportunities for her to advance her own position.

There is no reason on earth why any allied nation could not rely on the USA or the UK when necessary; history shows that. But Merkel's EU no longer tolerates independence or criticism from within or without, regardless of the real situation.

So she'll try to take possession with the only other significant member with a chance of having a viable economy, ignoring their history when it comes to being relied upon. Good luck with that.

So Germany is finally achieving hegemony over the vast majority of Europe. Just that pesky island nation and their pals across the pond not playing ball (oh and the big bear to the east). Deja vu all over again.

Indeed it does seem that way.
