I just wish they'd use a different word.

Marriage is, to many, the union between a man and a woman. Why isn't there a different word for a similar arrangement between 2 males (or females) ?
scratchchin Like civil partnership, perhaps...?

Yes, but 'awkward', we need just one simple word......... What's so difficult ?

She's a CHRISTIAN democrat isn't she? What did everyone expect her to believe when it comes to marriage?

Why does it bother you? And given divorce rates amongst gay men are around half that of hetero couples, they appear to be the ones taking it seriously.

It doesn't particularly 'bother' me, and I'm not sure why divorce rates amongst gay men has anything to do with a word definition. It just seems that, after numerous years of 'marriage' meaning man+woman, we haven't come up with any other other word to signify man+man/woman+woman. Why shouldn't we have a simple word so that it's a clear definition ?

Because, as I understand it, gay couple wouldn't want their marriage to be any different whatsoever to heterosexual couple.
Would you rewrite all the laws, for example, that are dealing with any aspect of marriage to include the word, so change the wording from '.... maried .....' to ' ...... both married and garried ....'. Just because some dinosaurs are feeling a little uncomfortable?

Eta: I do have a lot of time for Merkel. On this subject she's a tit.

The laws have already been rewritten to include civil partnerships, no?

I almost see your point but it just seems to be needlessly complicating things to make a new word.

Men and women could marry and benefit from the various legal protections that offered. That still remains the same, only now if Gary and Ben or Susie and Mary want to do the same they can.

There's no difference between changing the meaning of a word and adding a new word. You're trying to describe a thing. Pragmatically, it makes sense to change the meaning of the word marriage. Save time and money in the printers etc through simplification.

However on a human level, I can appreciate why homosexuals want to be married. It's a sign of equality.

Right, exactly.

There's an obvious progressive argument for equal marriage but that's not palatable to some right of center or Christian types.

Hence I prefer to come at it from the libertarian/classic liberal position that the government has zero business in people's personal lives including what two consenting adults can marry.

Merkel played this very well - she allowed a free vote on the issue which kept any potential coalition partners happy while herself voting against it which kept the god-botherers in her own party at bay.

I never paid much attention to this but was just thinking, imagine of Trump came out with the fact he thinks gay marriage is wrong should not be allowed. Can you imagine the shouty people and protests screaming on CNN.

While merkel gets a free pass.

Why?

Marriage has been around a lot longer than the religions that wish to deny same sex marriage.

Merkel on track to become Germany's longest-serving chancellor. Many thought the refugee crisis would bring her down but German voters are still willing to put their faith in her. To win a 4th consecutive term as head of government is impressive stuff.

Been in Germany a few times recently. Merkel is seen as a Steady Eddie who never veers too wildly from the centre path. She's a safe choice in a Trumpian world. And, of course, years of okayish economic growth and her stronger grip on controlling the EU have helped.
