Le Pen winning round 1 won't change the end result, but will still create a political earthquake.

Indeed, there will be some worried bureaucrats in Brussels!

From Twitter, potentially big news...

Can't see anything on Interior Ministry site. Care to share the link please? Thanks.

The predicted losers have all endorsed Macron for 2nd round. So vote Macron for the establishment or Le Pen for anti establishment.

I think she'll still lose the 2nd round, but should closer than predicted.

Am I missing something here? Who's 'PeterSweden7'? Anything from French Interior Ministry (as stated on that image). Thanks.

I think the higher Le Pen's vote share ends up, the less predictable the second round becomes, not just because obviously her starting point is higher, but because it points more and more to the established view being more Paris-centric than previously thought.

Macron will win, but a useful signal to Brussels that all is not well and change is needed in Europe...

It's not the first time, Jean Marie Le Pen got through to the 2nd round against Chirac. And then got trounced, because the majority of French people would vote for anyone except the extreme right.
The FN has been on ~20% for 20+ years, this is nothing new in France. They haven't made any steps forward, despite trying to ride the wave of populism following Brexit and Trump.

Not sure who this Peter is, but the numbers are most likely from Bloomberg who get them from the French interior ministry website. They in turn publish them in the order they arrive, with smaller polling stations in less populated areas delivering sooner.

Suppose there is less support for Le Pen in urban areas so at the moment I would trust the polls more than 9m counted votes.

Barring something dramatic happening - like Macron being exposed as a teetotal vegan - I can't see how Le Pen will even get close to him in round 2. I guess this is why the voting system is designed as it is.

https://twitter.com/afneil/status/8562322684734873... - 20m votes counted.

Seems it's rural areas first, so there'll be an anti-Le Pen swing from the cities.
