The presidential favourite François Fillon is in trouble.

It is bad enough that a video of his wife denying doing in any work has emerged, but now the anti-fraud team are also looking at jobs he gave to his children!

84000 euros paid to his school age children.

If 2016 was bad, then 2017 seems to be shaping up to be worse. Seems like the perfect storm, could put La Pen into the French presidency and the interview I saw of her with Amanpour on CNN last night, she wants her own borders and currency within the EU or a Frexcit referendum, to take France out. Either way that will break the EU.

Just back from Paris on business. Interesting to hear the feelings of the countrymen and women. Fillon was a hugely popular choice, being centre right, but this news has seen people dorp their support like a hot croque monsieur.

Le Pen must be loving it.

Politics and corruption are endemic the world over it seems.

I can't see Fillon surviving these revelations.
Fillon has said he'll stand down if a formal investigation is launched (Reuters article).

Journo asks Le Pen a question about how her body guards are paid. Her bodyguards rough up the journo. Yea, nothing suspicious about that. laugh

I'm guessing they won't be paid a lot, as they seem more doorman level of a rough pub than trained pro's.

Have a feeling this is a very typical witch-hunt from their left wing.
What it will be doing (with the usual ill thought out methodology from the left wing), is handing a large amount of votes to Le Penn.

Le Penn is going to be an interesting one. Brexit/Trump shows that people are less likely to admit publicly that they are voting towards the right due to the Polls due to the perceived stigma. The terrorist attacks & mess of Calais camps there will helped Le Penn enormously.

They are, but the French are expert and have their very own brand of it.

Indeed this is fairly low level corruption paying someone for a non job is fairly normal.

However if it sticks then he has no hope and the Republicains wont be able to get things together in time.

It looks like it will be between Macron and LePen

We'll see but he appears to be a gravy trainer par excellence from what's being said. Makes the Kinnocks look quite restrained but I guess it's becoming the rule rather than the exception.

And some still think the EU is worthwhile.

That's next level, even Madame L-Orange would blush at the audacity of such sweeping, pro-corruption reforms. And all from the left, who tell us all piggies should be equal, just some more than others, of course, comrade.

The Guardian said:
“We took a decision in the government and we are going to press ahead,” Sorin Grindeanu said after a meeting of his ruling leftwing Social Democrats (PSD).

Except that in second round polling Macron is expected to do significantly better than Fillon against Le Pen.....

Not sure about that - Le Penn is under attack for some dodgy use of EU funds https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/01/mari...

And a very interesting way of dealing with difficult questions... https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/02/fren...

TBF though, the Guardian are hardly likely to be non-partisan on their reporting of a right wing figure. I really do think that in France, in terms of corruption, you're looking at - as in the recent US elections - not choosing the best, but rather the least worst candidate, sadly.

I think it would be very understandable that ordinary - i.e. non-radical - citizens of all backgrounds will be extremely concerned and also suspicious of if or how the authorities are protecting them.

^^^this

exactly what you would expect from the Owen Jones mouthpiece. How far is the Guardian from being a non-existent paper? Can't be long now.

Paul Larrouturou, the journo (hardly the correct word for him, he's simply a twitter user with a mike, he uses twitter more than Trumpet!), has been trying to make a name for himself for a while. He's regularly told he's unwelcome at events and also NF meets but he simply pins on his badge and turns up with the intent of 'look at me. One day I'm going to be famous!'
He's a jerk, not a journalist. Christ, he doesn't even have is own biog on the internet.

Look! I am journo! I must be. I have Mike!

Non news. Except for the Grauniad, of course.
