There comes a point where people start to lose sympathy, especially if they thing you're milking a tragic event for your own ends.

I know different people react differently but personally in this sort of scenario I think I'd be spending a bit more quiet time with the kids, not spending the first anniversary of the violent murder of a wife and mother throwing a public party for campaign purposes.

Though Mr Cox has come across as a bit of a cock more than once.

They are merely combining forces with The Big Lunch so said street parties (small community centre lunches) will already be happening.

This wont be anything other than what normally happens for the big lunch. It just gives it a different focus and probably more funding and publicity.
And a day of rolling news coverage from the BBC talking to happy and likeable families who voted remain picnicking in parks, and contrasting them with angry bigots in run down boozers who voted Leave.

You never know, there might even be a "hate crime" or two if some glue sniffer with an England shirt kicks the lemonade stall.

Something the McCanns would do well to heed.

Smiler.

Yeah, I heard a bit about that mentioned on Jeremy Vine (Radio 2) yesterday. Share food with your neighbours, have a street party, celebrate Joe's life. Err I don't think so, I'll chat with my neighbours but that's about as far as it goes, and for sure it's sad that she was murdered but then so have many other people been murdered. We don't have street parties for everyone else that has been killed, I didn't know her personally, it's a nice gesture, but I'm out.
But it quite clearly states her murderer shouted Britain first during the act and it also states the event will be similar to the jubilee so how dare you not?
I heard the interview on R4 this morning & after her husband read out the list of organisations with the comment "everyone is behind it", I did raise an eyebrow.

The Scouts, The RNLI, Help for Heroes, the Premier League amongst others. I wonder what the public response would be from certain quarters if it transpired any group did not want to get involved.

He did go on to acknowledge that there are issues with integration in the UK (which I took to mean immigrant & indigenous communities) but suggested that it was for government to resolve. Which glossed over the nub of the issue imo.

The whole thing seems another opportunity for more binary rhetoric & polarisation.

True. But you and I both know that the vast majority of the people that participate will just be doing so as part of The Big Lunch, much as they did last year. Her husband will hijack that for his own political agenda.
Does 'The Big Lunch' want to be hijacked by this? Perhaps Arron Banks should also hijack The Big Lunch to celebrate independence day.

Terrible thing to have happened, the murderer seemed unhinged to me and her family have my sympathy. However her husband seems to have used her death for political ends ever since the event though, which seems inappropriate.

The whole deification thing of Jo Cox is bizarre, I guess it's a consequence of the polarization of the country after the referendum and the desire of some to exploit that.

All feels a bit distasteful though.

I think distasteful is an inadequate word. Had she been my sister , I'm afraid my Brother in law would be, by now, left in no doubt as to my feelings.

Vile piece of work.

Sick exploitation of a death for purely political reasons.
Shameful.

Having his Big Lunch during Ramadan probably won't do much to help either, excluding a big proportion of his wife's former constituency from taking part.

Oh the hoops the bien pensant have to jump through!

yes Using the Anniversary of her death for political purposes is in very poor taste, and hijacking something apolitical to boot. Shame.
