I'm not convinced that this bomb has achieved anything remotely close to a success. Presumably the aim is to stabilise Afghanistan and stopping Afghanistan being used as an ISIS base,

The USA started bombing this area of Afghanistan in 2001 would you say there are now less Islamic terrorists (baddies got beaten) or more Islamic terrorists (baddies possibly not getting beaten)

Obviously the individual baddies in the cave got beaten but on a larger scale dropping bombs on hillsides in Afghanistan has already been proven not to work.

It was a tactical bomb (clear a zone they'd been having problems dominating) with a strategic message (we've got really big bombs and are prepared to use them Mr Kim).

It's generated discussion due to it's size rather than any particular regional 'success'.

Not really, there isn't a chance in hell of getting one anywhere remotely near anything of strategic value inside North Korea, and Kim knows it.

No, I can't envisage a C-130 trundling across NK either; it's more a metaphorical message than a literal one I think, and of course, looks sufficiently bellicose on Fox for domestic hawk consumption.

Definitely, it's sobering that it probably sufficed better in that regard. Hopefully we'll see Bill O'Reilly riding the next one, Strangelove style. hehe

A good BBC report, visiting the actual MOAB site after the event. Locals claim, as might be expected, it made little difference to the war.

Sylviaforever, there's nothing like being schooled by a civilian on U.S. Military munitions. All these people commenting military experts don't you know, they watch CNN and BBC fake news and just like that, they are informed individuals.

Not sure I understand - the comment referred to a youtube video of another bomb in another place?

A sarcastic comment, aimed towards the armchair generals on here.

Sums up the entire US achievement in Afghanistan. And Iraq.

Once you get beyond the initial OpEd bit, most of the locals would have liked a bigger or better bomb, and the Afghan forces seemed keen. So not a complete waste of time from their perspective.

I don't disagree with your comment. I just think it should be borne in mind that Afghanistan is a collection of tribes who have spent decades, if not centuries, kicking several bells out of each other. The ones who are asking for bigger/better/more bombs to be used are just one faction in this conflict. Other than killing tens of thousands of Afghans the 16-year US intervention hasn't changed this "dynamic". All it means is that a lot of afghans will be seeking revenge against the US at some point. The Taliban (and possibly AQ) in Afghanistan are fighting ISIS, much as AQ and ISIS are fighting Assad in Syria. So in some cases their our "allies" and in some cases they're our enemies confused

We need to stay out of the ME and not get all "Yee haw" about big bombs...

So I'm an armchair general for commenting on a link to the wrong explosion video?
