Off to see Top Gun tonight for the nnnnth time but, a first for me, at an open air cinema. 12 y/o son is being dragged along. He is unsure what all the fuss is about.

I'll own up to being excited. Infact, very excited.

Show him this. Best rehashed trailer ever. If anybody can get to the end without laughing your a better man than me.

Although at 12 he might be a tad too young.

So,

What a night! Freezing cold in Catton Park.

But, when the F-14 afterburners lit up on the jumbotron I was a teenager all over again back in the 80's. New generation of teens/kids who saw it liked it and got it.

Now to go buy that GPZ900R and dig out my A2 jacket and cover it in patches!

One final postscript. Me and GF are tying the knot in LV this October; both of us agreed the minute we heard it again last night we'll walk down the aisle in the Little White Chapel to 'Highway to the Dangerzone' smile And the best bit, one of our guests signed up to the USN (eventually becoming a Chief) the day after he saw TopGun all those decades ago.

Lots of F-14 action only they are in nicer colour schemes.

I didn't realise "Highway to Hell" featured in "Top Gun".

Doesn't just being whimsical.

Just like "The Final Countdown" doesn't feature in "The Final Countdown".

Just rewatched that. Apart from greater variety of aircraft, and the tail fin art, Top Gun is imho by far the better film.

Weird thought - the number of years between now and when TFC was made is about the same as the number of years between the attack on Pearl Harbor and when TFC was made.

TFC is enjoyable nonsense (as is TG for that matter).

I just prefer the colour schemes carried by the US Navy aircraft in TFC. TFC was made in 1979 just before the US Navy switched from the highly colourful markings they had been carrying for over 20 years to the rather dull and scruffy shades of grey schemes that became the norm from around 1980/81.

It was the last chance to see Tomcats, Intruders etc in their spectacular liveries.

I though this was going to be one of those "....so can anyone lend us their F14 Tomcat to flypast the wedding..." etc we normally see with cars!!!

They'd have to talk nicely to Iran to get that.

Outside of Iran, are there any flying F14s left? (Private collectors, museums etc)
