Was down the local this eve discussing Mr Moore. As we talked I brought up the TV series with Moore as Ivanhoe.
I was ridiculed for a short while.
'Roger Moore, Ivanhoe? Don't be daft Dan, he wasn't in that series - you've had one too many!'
I said I was old enough (older than most others there) to remember it clearly! I was a school kid at the time.
'A school kid Dan... in the late 90s!' Lots of giggles.

'I'm talking the late 50s when you lot weren't born!'

They still didn't believe me, so I got one to google it on his mobile.

Ha ha ha. He who laughs last...

This is the YouTube episode that came up. Two left to go home and watch it on their big screens rather than on the mobile. They are even more in awe of Sir Roger now!

I'm abroad so only just heard the news.

My fave bond, first one I saw was spy who loved me, the intro with reverse shot on ski's and parachute opening will stay with me forever. Plus it taught me not to trust hot blondes (he has just left, he has just left hehe )

Such a classy gent, his humour was top notch.

I'll be watching cannonball run on my flight home smile

Sir Roger was my Bond as the first 007 I saw was 'The Spy who Loved Me'.

Apparently a gentleman on and off screen and with a hardness that wasn't often seen in public. I'm paraphrasing but I remember an interview with Lee Marvin, actor and WWII U.S. Marine Purple Heart winner. Marvin was asked about various hard men he had met over the years and said that one who stood out and got his respect was Moore; apparently Moore was one of the few men who could drink as much as he could, still stand up, and could take a punch batter than anyone else he'd met... 'Because I was the sonofabh that hit him'.

RIP Sir Roger Moore.
Ditto re The Spy Who Loved me...still my favourite Bond. Barbara Bach and the Esprit chase were bonuses in a great film.

I remember the story from Lee Marvin...think it was in Loaded magazine or similar.

I saw Sir Roger last year leaving a London hotel with his wife. He tipped the doorman, held the taxi door open for his wife and had a smile on his face and I thought what a true gentleman. I read yesterday he was very happy when he received his KBE because the citation was for his charity work with Unicef which is the measure of the man.

RIP Sir Roger.

Terrible shame, he was my bond.

His diary from the making of live and let die is a damn good read unfortunately an ex gave my copy to a charity shop but if you can find a copy it's brilliant.

I've got that! Never heard of anyone else who's even heard of it. I found mine in a used bookshop for about 3 quid. Abebooks prices now seem to have gone into 3 figures for it, which is madness. Really good account of daily life on set though.
I've got it as well - it's in a box in the garage somewhere.

Funny, he was my Gran's fave too, indeed she even claimed she could see a resemblance between him and my older brother. We just thought she had gone dotty in her old age (she lived to 98) but as Phil got older we began to see it too - although my shouts of “Look, there’s Bruv!” whenever Commander Bond – or Lord Sinclair, or Mr. Templar – appeared on screen tended to mystify non-relatives!

My favourite Bond, I greatly respected Connery but Moore gave a light touch and made the films hugely entertaining to watch, I still watch his Bond films mainly for his style and humour.

I don't bother watching the Daniel Craig ones, humourless and filled with gratuitous violence and Craig's dead, soulless eyes.

Moore is always entertaining, also good in The Saint and The Persuaders - and the Cannonball IIRC, whatever the role he shines with real humour and charisma. He'll be missed.

For me my favourite Bond, might be down to the age I was when he was playing it, liek Tom Baker was the best Doctor Who but the gloriously cheesy late seventies/eighties bonds are what it was about for me, Sean Connery was good, probably better but all that stuff with Space Shuttles and Lotuses is what grabbed me as a kid,

As many have posted already, he was the best bond for me. Connery was great, but Moore added that humor and the one liners where fantastic. Watched Man with the Golden Gun on sunday as well frown

Always seemed a gentlemen on and off screen and will be sadly missed. RIP

Moonraker with Lois Chiles - best Bond movie of 'em all.
Errr, NO! Walking around in slow motion to 'simulate' zero gravity? A pigeon doing a double-take?

Had its good bits (mainly the villain, brilliantly underplayed by Michael Lonsdale), but the best?!?!

Right....and there were no other good-but-with-slightly-cheesy-bits movies in the 80s...

I don't think they had an actual zero gravity stage at pinewood, nor would the budget extend to it.

RIP 007.

One of my favourite Bonds, loved the wit he brought to it, and the gadgets, Lotus particularly.

Right, must "hiss off" back to work.

70s wink

Moonraker has my favourite pre-credit sequence though, stealing the Space Shuttle from on top of the transport 747, in mid-air... totally realistic, right?

Not the point. The comparison was to all the other Bond cannon, stating MR was 'the best'. Even Sir Rog' didn't agree with that assessment.

He was brilliant in his cameo in Car SOS, especially telling Tim to F**k Off, talk about a laugh out loud moment.

Came across as great fun and a true gent, also the Bond of my youth and hence the best.

RIP Sir Roger
