Recently moved to London and I am finding myself regularly doing longer journeys for surfing and other sporting activities with my mates..

Always had a strong hankering to own a speedy estate car.. of course the dream is a B7 RS4 but that's out of my price range.

What estate would you buy for under £5K? Petrol and manual are a must, oh and the more fun the better!

Cheers

Great shout. Borrowed one of these the other weekend for a long trip and it was quite amusing. Can pick up decently optioned ones for peanuts as well.

Mondeo 2.5T Estate if you can look past the badge.

The gearbox change can show a BMW a thing or 2 about what a good 'box is, the engine sounds great albeit subdued and with the right car they go on for a while. If you really want to you can turn up the wick a bit too but they are fine as they are. Our family have two of them from them enjoying the first alot ; they are quite a different experience from a 2.0TDCi.

They were cheaper also a while back but it seems values have firmed up lately. I was looking to buy one and it seems they have stopped dropping frown.

If you can look past the slightly dated interior then the Saab 9-3 SportCombi 2.8 V6 Aero with a stage 1 Hirsch remap will give you 275bph and 400nm torque. Even on the 2.0T there is power to spare. Aero gives a slightly firm ride so might be worth looking out for XWD, although they are like hen's teeth.

It's quite a bit to put through the front wheels but plenty quick, XWD would help.

Extremely comfortable car so London to Newquay will be a breeze.

Lower mileage examples are getting harder to find though.

I spent a bit more on a late low-miler but they can easily be had for your budget - Impreza WRX wagon.

Mine's been doing sterling service! https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Not as big as the Legacy of course, but you can get plenty in it still.

Can you get the VXR Estate for 5k? They're a good car but both it & the 2.8T Saab fall foul of the £520 road tax frown

Hmm, good point. It might just be hatches at that price

It depends on when it was registered wink I know of quite a few 93 V6 Aeros that are old enough to be £305 tax
