Nah mate! He just needed toughening up, it comes with time when you're on the tools. You can't be a Jessie when you're on the tools, being on the tools means you have to be able to take a bit of banter on the tools. When I was on the tools and we got a new lad on the tools we had some right on the tools based banter which involved me pushing him under a moving bus. The soft bugger died! Still, what do you expect - he'd not been on the tools 5 minutes.
Sorry - not in the spirit of the thread and the awful tragedy, but that post is superb. Does anyone else read the 'locked up in a cage and set on fire' bit and think there may well be much more to it than that? Its sounds like a very extreme description of something that might actually have been a fair bit milder than that.
Whatever went on it seems like there were many factors to this lads death and sadly many opportunities to prevent it. You'd have thought that between his parents and key worker that they'd have identified his place of work as not being suitable considering his mental health.

Why would an Audi dealer have a"cage"?
OT but when I worked for the VAG Apprenticeship Program we had some overly PC diversity box ticker give us a presentation on bullying.
The example she used was
The Service Manager tells the Apprentice to wash his car.
Apprentice says no.
What do you do?
When was an apprentice, if the manager gave you a job , you did it.
I spent 3weeks painting.
Apparently if you take any more action against the apprentice to get the car washed his are now bullying.

the coroner is a knob.'One said: “My boss told me to hurry up and hang myself because I’m a useless piece of st.”
'PC tied me up, pressure-washed me. Thought it was hilarious. I couldn’t stand up afterwards. He called me a pussy and I had to walk home soaking wet.” Another entry said “PC” had approached Cheese after his parents complained to the company and called him “a pussy who went telling tales to mummy”.'
'Bedford said he understood Cheese’s parents’ desire to blame the Audi dealership, but added that steps taken by the management following his death had succeeded in improving conditions there.' after the fact

As said before, its the gobstes who get it hardest. Genuinely softer characters ime are left alone.

Locking people in cages is pretty minor IMO. I've definitely had worse, it was all done in good fun. I guess it just didn't bother me that much...
Things that make you go "hmmm". Yipper said:
The motor industry is cringey and dated. Uber-macho posturing is par for the course. From violent workshop pranks to passive-aggressive salesmen and backstabbing white-collars at head office, the culture today remains more 1970s than 21st century.
Ooh, check you and your 'white collar' out...Clearly there were other factors at play but on reading the story if quotes such as "My boss told me to hurry up and hang myself because I’m a useless piece of st." are true then that is clearly not banter or the type of thing that is character building, it is bullying. I mean a serious mental health problem is considered a disability so in my view this is disability discrimination, would anyone think it acceptable if that kind of comment was made to someone with a physical disability?
Also, I think that while some things could be intended as (and actually be) light hearted banter there is always a risk it will be perceived differently by the person on the receiving end... even more risk if one person involved is the boss as there is an inherent power difference in the relationship.
It is all very well to tell these 4 Yorkshiremen style tales of the workplace culture 'back in my day' but would any of you really tolerate this kind of thing happening to your child? I suspect if someone posted on PH asking for advice on how to manage this kind of situation the responses would be split between quit and sue the company or kick the st out of the perpetrators.... I doubt anyone would be saying man up snowflake.

Why would an apprentice be washing the service managers car on company time? If an apprentice refuses to do part of their actual job, there's disciplinary action that can be taken. Why would an Audi dealer have a"cage"?

If the gaffer wants his car washed, he can do it himself. Straightforward.
And why should apprentices need 'toughening up'? It's a car workshop, not the Foreign Legion.
No wonder my service bills are so high if the bloody mechanics are spending all day flicking each other with wet towels and greasing each other up.

Absolutely. Tasks should be part of the job/role description. They aren't "cheap labour" to do anything and everything. If the gaffer wants his car washed, he can do it himself. Straightforward.
