Right, I know these cars aren't direct competitors, but I am looking to lease in the next couple of weeks, and these all offer roughly the same price for the spec.

Jaguar XE 2.0d R Sport, Automatic, RWD
BMW 420i Coupe, Manual, RWD
Audi A5 diesel. Automatic, FWD

I'm struggling on which to get though? I really like the Jag and it has a lot of tech, etc, but am 23 and worried it's a bit of an old mans car? (Correct me if I'm wrong) The BMW is nice, but will be the least specced of the three, so won't have much tech going for it. The Audi has a reasonable amount of tech, and looks good. Does anyone have experience with any of these and could give me some ideas? Or other similar cars? I'm really struggling haha!

It will be used for driving to work and social.. I don't have kids and practicality isn't a huge deal for me. I want it to be fairly quick, but doesn't have to be crazy, just enough to be able to overtake easily etc...

Cheers

A lot of us didn't buy a car out of fear of it being a stereotype of some sort.

You'll realise when you're older that you really shouldn't give a flying hoot.

Buy what puts a smile on your face as you walk out your front door.

None of those are bad cars however if you're young and presumably have few commitments could you not be a bit more adventurous with your budget?

I'm not actually a fan of the 20i engine in the BMW. I can't put my finger on it but I'd rather have a 20d. This changes with 6cyl petrol vs diesel though.

I had a 2.0d XE R Sport in a lovely blue colour as a hire car recently for a few days and I actually really liked it. Comfortable, drives well and as you say plenty of tech, everything you could need which I assume is standard as Enterprise wouldn't spec up their hire cars? Certainly more than you get as standard in the 4 series - although if the 4 series is an M Sport then you get Pro Nav and the other stuff.

Not driven an A5 but never been a fan of Audi so can't help you there.

I think I'd have the Jag...

Thought I would chip on here, being the same age as you and going though the hot hatch stage and wanting something bigger I had the choice of these three, and i took delivery of the Jag XE R-Sport early this week. I have to admit I was worried that the Jag would be seen as an old mans car, but between the three, i wanted to avoid FWD, and BMW is a great car but they dont stand out as much as the Jag IMO.

For me, I drove the jag, and at the price they're offering them on lease at the moment its the best choice. It feels like a luxury car, it really does feel special and its different. It drives great (and I went for a manual one)

Its all about what you enjoy driving the most, what feels right for you. But i can say you should definitley try one. I went for Casieum Blue with the black pack.

At 23 you shouldn't be that bothered about how much tech you have in a car.

For driver enjoyment take the one with a petrol engine and RWD :-)

Take another visit to your Jag dealership as JLR are introducing some new engines to their line up both Petrol & Diesel, from your list I'd take the Jag.

I test drove the 420i a few weeks ago to see what the engine was like, not brilliant but it depends what you are used to. The 4 coupe is a lovely car though, as is the A5 coupe

In the end i went for the 125d!

I've had the 430 coupe for 2 years, and A5 2.0 2 years. Also driven our fleet XE's.

Go for the Jag, better steering than the others with a great Chassis and rides much better.
Don't worry about Tech. The only important thing is DAB radio, Blue Tooth and Climate control. Maybe Satnav and rear parking buzzers everything else is pointless.

The BMW idrive in the 4 series was horrible and well outdated. The Audi is better and Jags easy to us.

At 22 I'm about the same age as you and had to make a similar choice back in January. In the end I went for the A5 coupe sline manual. With the 190 Bhp ultra engine it's more than fast enough to over take. Inside it had everything you could need in the car all as standard and I opted for the vc which I love.
Also found the service at Audi the best compared to BMW which was shocking.
One of the things I love is even after driving it for 3 months I have only seen another 1 on the road and that's a salesmen at Audi. I know a lot of people who swear by there BMs but Jusy didn't do it for me.

My Dad has recently bought an XE R Sport.
he tried all of them. The Jag is a genuinely lovely car.
Go with that. It drives beautifully and the interior is miles ahead of the BMW and on par with the Audi.

I am 26. I drive this as my daily.

I have never been worried what other people think of what I drive though....

This is 180 2.0 D. Options are paint, folding rear seats and parking pack and auto.

Iv put 11k miles on it since November, and im still really pleased. Has the grunt to over take, 50+mpg when making progress, lovely ride (I know that sounds OAP but it is miles better than a BMW)

In all honesty I would originally of gone straight to a 3 / 420d. However my previous experience with Vines group dealers was awful with my old BMW, I went to look at a 320 at a chandlers dealership, experience was awful again, I went in 3 times before someone showed an interest. Then I asked them to show me a low spec 320 msport. The sales man showed me round a used 330D, with performance pack and told me if I bought a bog standard 320d it would be just like this one sir. To top it all off when I asked for a test drive, I was told they didn't have a 320d I could drive there and then, if I was looking to place a deposit they could arrange a test drive in the week.

So naturally the second word was off.

Popped into Jag, nothing was too much trouble even though they were busy. Got me out on a test drive and then. When I wasn't convinced by the MPG the 200 mile old demo did, they lent me a car for the weekend with 5k miles to see how I got on.

Order was placed after this. I got the car 1 month later.

My comments on the Jag in comparison to a BMW at a glance.
Jag ride is better by a long way compared to a Msport.
Performance, nothing in it.
BMW infotainment system wins hands down. Nothing wrong with it but the Jag is like a windows computer, the BMW is like a Mac.
BMW dealers are shocking, and iv tried a few. Jag dealer was great!
Nothing has gone wrong with the Jag yet!

I second this. Don't own one yet, looking to get one next year but Casieum Blue with black pack looks amazing

I personally went for the Casieum Blue with Black pack, Templar 18"s, Jet/Oyster leather and the meridian sound system because the standard one is a bit pants...

My business partner went for the Italian Racing Red, which is also a very nice colour!

I've been in plenty of 4 series and A5's, if I had to choose out of those two it would be the 4 series, however I would pick the XE.

I was close to getting a Jag XE, glad I didn't, there were four (company cars) in our office, each one has issues, adblue problems (common apparently), nav failure, brake failure and one had full on engine failure and shat it's oil on the motorway.

I've got a A5, on my second, probably make it a third with the new shape. Never had any problems in over 5 years.

We've had a Jag XE 2.0D R Sport for about 18 months.

It's a pile of ste and we can't wait for the lease to end and give the thing back to Jaguar.

Actually, now you mention it (I'd forgotten) - I took the hired XE back early as it said something like "no more engine starts available in 30 miles" due to needing to be topped up with adblue. Assume this wouldn't normally happen if you own it as you'd keep it topped up.

Not necessarily a problem in the one I had, just Enterprise being lazy.
