Selfie campaign goes wrong. Love the British sense of humour though and is along same lines as Boaty McBoatface scenario.

Rolf Harris and Jimmy Savile were also in there, lol.

Always amazed how Walkers get away with any of their ad campaigns. Using a sports star to promote junk food and give it a healthy halo is on very shaky ground.

American celebrities have a habit of falling for these type of pranks.

Oh, and the Aston Villa owner.

Perhaps the ASA were unable to equivocate sports cars and health benefits. Which wouldn't be altogether surprising.

When the original campaign was launched all those years ago it was more about 'nice guy acting like a selfish because the product is tempting' than any particular link to sports or 'health'.

These days the target audience for the products don't have much of an idea who he even is, at best he's that old guy off MotD who says stupid things on Twitter or who they see in the Mail, or things about his son, or his brother. Sports star doesn't come into it at all.

The only reason he's kept on is pure force of habit, his marketing value is nowhere near what it used to be.

Very much doubt this. Whether you like him or not, Gary Lineker is well known. The target audience will know exactly who he is.

They know who he is now, less so about who he was as a 'sports star'. Apparently anyway.

Still, lots of press coverage of the brand and not really negative (laughing rather than offended) so job done.

He hasn't played for England since 1992 has he? I'm 34 and I barely remember why he's ended up doing the crisp adverts and twitter rants.

Wasn't there a story similar to this a few years back where members of the public to text in slogans to appear on a big scree - with 'unexpected' consequences.
