It alsways seems odd that these emirates don't have more problems with Islamic terrorism.

They've got the wrong kind of islamists, the foreigners doing all that fornication and drinking and other lewdness the nutters don't like, they also help the west, some even have foreign forces based there.

Is it to do with who does their banking or something?
I have often wondered this myself and as yet can't really fathom a good reason...
You don't st in your own playground. Dubai especially is a bit like Vegas, what happens in Dubai stays in Dubai.

Otherwise the local Police actually keep a close eye on those with more extreme views and they often disappear. It doesn't get reported much though.

In the UAE there are also some mercenary-type army units sitting in the desert waiting for any uprising. Non muslims so they won't side with anyone or mind shooting 'their brother' if anything happens. There was an article about this on CNN (I think) a few years ago.

It could be because they are all very repressive regimes and chop off heads and hands of those they think might be terrorist sympathisers (only the ones they don't agree with of course).

dons tinfoil hat.....

If one was of a conspiracy theory/paranoid mindset I would suggest that those countries that have cut ties know that something VERY serious is about to go down which can be traced very rapidly back to Qatar and are doing their best to distance themselves as quickly as possible in case they get caught up in the st storm that will follow.

removes tinfoil hat, grabs bug-out bag, runs to the hills.....

Yes. And if you, your lose your head. Saudi is especially known for making it clear to their Wahabbi funders of terrorism not to mess around at home, do it elsewhere.

I recall a family friend many years ago who works in oil exploration mentioning this sort of thing, stop the tribes from raiding / interfering with the foreign exploration teams - if they get attacked, it's bad for (the oil) business.

Hadn't heard about the mercenary army, very interesting.

Is this not to do will Al Jazeera? The other states don't like what the news channel has been up to?

Expect to see the news channel closed as a concession.

But assuming Qatar Airways are still permitted?

I have a friend who flies for them. He hasn't got a clue what is going on but apparently the Qatari ban also means a ban on transport to and from Saudi/Egypt/UAE/Bahrain.

Interesting times - the US has a big military presence in Qatar.

I wonder if Qatar simply ran out of time for the overthrow of Assad and the resultant pipeline to Europe and instead has done a deal to access the Iranian Pipes, selling to India and China?

Then there is the MB issue - mentioned earlier in the thread. The SA regime have pulled support for the MB, but Qatar has not. In 2015 this caused a major rift when SA became convinced that the MB were planning a `colour revolution` for them.

Where is Israel in all this? so far the spat seems confined to the GCC states. Nobody who has been watching closely is under the misapprehension that Israel has not been entirely happy with the funding of terror in Syria or that the training / money and weapons have not come from a broad base of national actors. Is Qatar just being lined up as the fall guy?

Or are we being blown a giant smokescreen, from which will emerge the ACE in the pack? - a sell-able `reason` to go to war with Iran?

I guess that screws my flights to Ireland via Qatar airlines in a couple of weeks (from Dubai)!

I wonder if Qatar will get into bed with Oman? I suspect that they will stay neutral (they normally do) and allow them to use Muscat as a hub for Qatar airlines, using Oman air to transit to other ME flights ?

With the new part of airport it may be big enough ?

Sacrificial lamb being offered up?

Their links to the Muslim Brotherhood are well established. They don't even try to hide it.

It's probably al-jaz's links to the Muslim brotherhood. Wouldn't be surprised to see a region wide crack down on the MB over the next few days. I reckon that Egypt is the giveaway on that.

Unlike our TFHer above I don't think we're just about to some kind of event requiring distancing. I suspect we're seeing a political operation.
