Of course, because people are nasty.

From the fire commissioner:

"This is a major fire that affected all floors of this 24-storey building from the second floor upwards. I have over 200 of my firefighters and officers attending this incident, with 40 fire engines and a range of specialist vehicles, including 14 fire rescue units. We declared this a major incident very early this morning … the first call coming in at 12.54. Our first fire engines were on the scene in under six minutes.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus and extended duration breathing apparatus have been working in extremely challenging and very difficult conditions to rescue people and bring this major fire under control."

Doesn't sound like a lack of resources. Like other recent events, it sounds like a rapid response by the emergency services.

If flammible cladding was a factor, after the warning of camberwell for those that common sense eludes, then frankly we need to erect a gallows.

Hard to imagine how fire could spread to such an extent throughout the building like that but reports are it's because of the cladding to the outer building.
Reminds me of this one:

And this one in Beijing. The building caught fire after being hit by fireworks.

I find it somewhat crass that the 'live news' coverage seems to be continually asking anybody they can find "can you confirm how many have died?"

There are also lots of mentions of numerous reports and complaints in very recent months of safety risks BY the residents of the building. No fire exits, no escape procedures, corridors and rooms full of rubbish and builders waste, old furniture etc......

It is a truly terrifying thought but the Grenfell Action Group firmly believe that only a catastrophic event will expose the ineptitude and incompetence of our landlord, the KCTMO, and bring an end to the dangerous living conditions and neglect of health and safety legislation that they inflict upon their tenants and leaseholders.

It is our conviction that a serious fire in a tower block or similar high density residential property is the most likely reason that those who wield power at the KCTMO will be found out and brought to justice!

The Grenfell Action Group predict that it won’t be long before the words of this blog come back to haunt the KCTMO management and we will do everything in our power to ensure that those in authority know how long and how appallingly our landlord has ignored their responsibility to ensure the heath and safety of their tenants and leaseholders. They can’t say that they haven’t been warned!

Goes back a while too....

Just watched an interview with a resident and he said that despite being up at 1am he didn't hear the fire alarm going off in his flat until he opened his window and heard people running and shouting

What idiots specified that system?

that's truly terrible what an awful thing to happen for the residents of the tower block. And like many others are asking on here how the hell can a fire spread that quickly?

I bet they don't.

Lessons will be learnt though.

Even though they have been learnt decades ago already.

Sadly I agree.

Was out for a run about 4 miles away this morning and could see smoke still billowing into the skyline some seven hours after it started.

I foresee the market awash with used exterior cladding material in the very, very near future.

Poor building design, non-functioning warning systems or sprinklers, cheap flammable materials.

Depending on what they used, it could have just been a huge matchbox.

I guess there is a huge danger of the whole block collapsing now and the problems that will cause to building close by

RIP to those who have died - so sad and unnecessary

You say that, but it really looks like the fire only entered the building from the cladding inferno outside in a few spots. Perhaps a wet towell and hunkering down in the bathroom really was the best advice frown

Someone is going to prison for sure.

Sky news are at their usual games, presenter asking someone who saw someone jump from half way up "did they jump to the ground". No they grew wings and flew away. FFS.

I'm astonished the building is still standing, it appears to be totally gutted.

Anyone know if there has been organised evacuation as yet of the adjacent ares?

Just noticed there are 3 identical tower blocks nearby.

I wonder the their fate will be.
