So it does raise the question.
Who picked the fking strawberries before Igor and his mates turned up?
the Portuguese used to come over and it always used to be a east end tradition to leave the smoke come harvest time.

So he wants to pay the bare minimum for staff, I can't imagine why that would be with such generous buyers as our glorious supermarkets who will undoubtedly say we can pay you more Mr Farmer as we realise your labour costs have went up considerably. We must support local producers so we can keep our carbon footprint down. Oh yes he has nothing to worry about. I just love British strawberry's,well strawberry's that are packaged here so they can put a union jack flag on the box so people think they are buying British. Jobs a good un!

A business model founded on poles coming over to work for buttons is never a long term thing. Regardless of Brexit, what happens when there is an economic boom in Easter Europe and people no longer want to come over.
It's not the Polish that work in the agricultural and horticultural sectors so much now. They have been financially undercut by the Romainians and Bulgarians, the Polish were not happy, but hey ho it's a Global market.

every single traditional holiday period in the uk was initially arranged around the various harvesting seasons . when i was a kid most of the kids i knew regardless of background went to the "berries" in the summer and the "toties" in october, for a few days at least. it would be a good a way of encouraging youngsters today to get off their various devices and learning what fairly hard work is while having a good laugh . if nothing else they make a few quid and know if they don't want a hard manual labour job when they leave school they better get their finger out at school.

A fantastic opportunity for those who voted to send those damn foreigners home. Coming over here & taking our jobs etc etc.
I bet he will be snowed under with applications from the disadvantaged locals smile
Given there was no vote to 'send those damn foreigners home', you could just be speaking your normal complete bks. The issue came up in the run up to the vote and it was an area where pretty much every I saw and read agreed migrant labour come still come in and do such jobs as happened in years gone by.

Less desirable?
Here's a job you can do, do it or fk off, why is being unemployed an option if you are physically able to work and work is available.

I haven't heard the evidence with my own fine ears but apparently this chap was on R4 Today, saying he'd voted Leave but his business would go bust if he couldn't get migrant workers...

I know'll I'll be sorry when there's no great British strawberries - but you can only laugh.
Hundreds of industries have gone to the wall in Britain in the last 100 years, but none were due to a shortage of workers.

From manufacturing to agriculture to services, industries (like ships) have disappeared due to a severe shortage of *good managers* and good civil servants. Poor quality, low productivity, week training, low investment, slack laws, etc. etc.

It is the British Disease.

Mr Fruit Picker is a prime example. Crying into his strawberry punnet about going bust, and doing nothing, instead of thinking 5 years ahead and buying agrobots to replace them and increase productivity.

Sorted it for you. Me thinks it's time he thought about a more profitable business venture rather than whinging.
You do realise that government policies impact the success of a business? Please tell me you aren't that dim.

brexit you know it makes sense
An odd consequence of Brexit (feature?) is that it will make the cost of labour higher and very possibly drive mechanisation. At which point productivity will finally get of its knees. The reality of ready and cheap supplies of skilled and unskilled labour across a vast array of industries, has been a major factor in low investment and innovation and a punishingly low level of production to capita. Bring it on.
