Over the last 20 years, where's it all gone?

Wars, PFI schemes, bailouts, lack of growth?

Why are we so skint? (If posters could use numbers to back up their points that would be appreciated).

Money is just a standardised IOU. The only thing money ever gives you is the ability to receive more of the output of someone else's time. The only way to increase the wealth of society is to make people more efficient at producing stuff, and this is typically done with inventions such as better tools and retraining.

The money we have spent is with people investing in the long term. I choose to place a few hundred pounds every month into a pension. This allows someone else to spend it tomorow and I have the promise I will get it (and some interest) back later. The debt is the promise to repay these accounts.
