It sounds Mailish/Meldrewish/call-it-what-you-will-ish, but sadly I don't think you're far off the truth. I'm sure there are still many positives but there are SO many massive negative issues these days which seemingly can't/won't ever be properly tackled, this just being one. I'm really thinking that as soon as I can retire I need to emigrate, but even then Brexit will probably close a lot of easy options. Maybe the answer is to be out of the South East. I just don't know.

I'm surprised they haven't been given a shoeing by someone they are trying to rob.

Good Guardian article today on the London spike in moped thefts and street robberies.

Reposted from SP&L forum.

Rob someone using a moped in my country and see what you get:

https://youtu.be/czg6fv-uNSw

As I recall these guys stole a handbag from a lady walking along the road. Got caught by the locals. Guys in black t-shirts with radios are village security.

We pay a small sum a month (about £2.50) which goes the the local Banjar. This is kind of a community organisation who look after security, parking etc.

Generally speaking the Police will let the thieves get a good shoeing then step in. No penalties for those administering the kicking, unless they got the wrong people.

Crime rate is fairly low (except during Ramadan, when you need to keep your gate locked etc) and murder rate (for Indonesia overall) is about half that of the UK.

We had one fatal stabbing here a month or two ago - big news and the Police have set up a new task force to crack down on gangs of teens going round on mopeds committing nuisance and street crime.

Made me laugh a little bit as it said officers will be unarmed (police here are not routinely armed) but must be over 5' 5" to join the new unit....tall guys then! They've brought in some judo experts as well to help them brush up on arrest techniques.

At least they're trying to do something about it though....

Here's one more:

https://youtu.be/t_zFgC4v1w0

Guy steals phones using his moped. Gets caught by security - state of his face!
He's very likely to get five years in prison.

I'd also add - Police here do random roadblocks (again especially before Ramadan) and if you can't prove the moped is yours then they'll keep it until you can.

First time visiting London must have been back around early 90's. First thing always said by my aunt when we got into the car was lock the doors. Windows were never down.

This isn't exactly something new. Just that it's caught on camera. As a previous poster has said, windows up, doors locked. I don't wear flash watches but if I did and I was driving a Porsche in London, I certainly wouldn't be advertising for someone to come and steal it. That's just a bit thick imo.

Haven't read the thread (point might have already been made), but is the solution not to just close the window, lock the door and tell them to fornicate themselves?

Or reach out and push them over? Seems bizarre to me to just hand it over.

it's the element of surprise,

catching people unawares in a world of their own,

I doubt they would try if your windows were up.

Bit of the white bit from a spark plug and the window is no problem, in fact, it'll probably add to the shock when you're sat there listening to the radio and the window suddenly implodes

Exactly. locking the doors and closing the windows is no protection at all against this type of crime, especially where a car is locked into traffic, and cannot move forwards or backwards to get away from the situation. If a driver in their decent car, how willing would the driver be to damage their pride and joy by ramming the scrotes (probably stolen and completely uninsured scooter?
It would seem that the best, but not ideal strategy is to be aware as much as possible of the surroundings, and who / what is in them, and try to avoid wearing or showing bling or valuables of any kind, that can be seen from a scooter / bike running alongside. If the car is trapped in traffic, it should be relatively safe from carjacking, since if the driver was not in a position to drive away from the situation, the scrotes trying to steal the car might not be either.

Might be worth tinting the windows with security film, this 3m stuff is .3mm thick yet deters entry even with firearms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96x2tO9Xuxw

Living in S/E London I often see mopeds driven by scum two up in balaclava's with no helmets, why nothing is done I don't know.

Luckily I drive a cheap modded car with with road presence so it's a deterrent but I noticed when I had a hire car that I was followed a while back which I found disconcerting.

I've witnessed multiple phone jackings over the past couple of years when I worked by Loughborough Junction so am always weary when using my phone on the street.

The problem with a heavy tint, is that the driver might be pulled by the police, and the light emissivity through the windows checked, which itself, can result in a traffic offence, and possible fine and points on the license. Possibly the best defense is to be aware of ones surroundings, and stay clear as much as possible, from dodgy looking places, or people, not a fantastic solution I know, but short of carrying a licensed gun (and that brings with it a whole other set of problems) there does not seem to be much else that drivers can do. What would be the position if a taser is used by a driver? would that still stop them getting an acid shower, in the event of a crime of this type?
