I am due to collect my new 991.2 GTS in about a week - and I'm now looking at the extra insurances offered to me and wondering if they are worthwhile. I need to (a) consider if I want any of the insurances, and (b) if I would be better buying from OPC or elsewhere.

They are:

GAP - I believe this is worth having but feel I will get a better deal and better cover from somewhere like ALA or totallossgap.co.uk

SMART Repair - not sure about this, it is also available elsewhere (OPC £499). How much would it cost me to have stone chips and any slight scuffs repaired after 3 years?

Tyre and Alloy cover - with a puncture meaning a new tyre is mandatory, and they are £300 each this cover could be worth having (OPC £649)

Do you folks take any of these insurances out - and where do you buy them please?

Thanks.
Gordon

GAP you can get alot cheaper elsewhere - talk to a broker.
SMART repair - I had my stone chips repaired for £90+vat and a scuff for £35+vat. Not worth it imho
Tyre and alloy - got this but negotiated down to £499 for 3 years given I curbed the last alloys twice and had three punctures. Note you are limited on number of claims and cost per alloy/alloy

Only the GAP to cover your finance but I would recommend looking elsewhere.

Every option from the dealer cost £600. Every single add-on.

Tyre insurance, great idea but to be worth it you need 3 unfixable punctures for it to pay for itself.

SMART repair. Well, a typical fully warranted repair at a reputable spray shop is around the £300 mark.

Ironically a week after purchase I needed a new tyre but it still will take 2 unrepairable tyres to take me over the break even point.

Whatever you do, do not pay for their Autoglym paint protection. If you are going to get that, go to a pro indi detailer who will do a far better job than if its their in house valet guy.

OK here goes.! All insurances are a money making scheme of some sort however with Porsche a more pragmatic approach needs to be taken imo.
GAP: Worth it if you consider your a crap driver..
SMART: Waste of money unless you're a tailgater
Tyre and wheel cover: If you intend to keep the car for any length of time Tyre ins worth it ime however alloy ins only worth it if you park too close to curbs or allow your wife to drive it..
Glad to be of help..smile

..or get for free as part of the negotiations, or refuse to pay for it when they try to add it on at end as I didyes

The autoglym lifetime shine is probably a £60 application by the house valet and charged at £499 with bag of autoglym goodies. My detailer said they didn't do a bad job and paintwork only had very minor swirl marks hehe

I've actually paid for the tyre & alloy insurance on my last two Porsches

Panamera - paid for it'self in one go;
Ran over a piece of broken road sign on an unlit minor road which sliced through two tyres and scuffed the alloys

Two other punctures (no repairs, just new tyres)

GT3
reaction avoiding a bloody cat doing no more than 15 mph resulted in a scuff on the front wheel.
all sorted perfectly

think I paid 350 for both alloy & wheel cover for 3 years.
(not got my monies worth - yet - on the GT3)

It depends on how risk averse you are, and your driving habits. GAP insurance is there for piece of mind, and for the cost over 3/4 years, it just guarantees you if the worst should happen. My cousins car got nicked 3 months ago, and due to him having GAP insurance, they are paying for a completely new car, which is not actually more expensive than what he paid for his car 18 months ago as his model has been replaced. As for alloy wheel insurance, if you are in the habit of curbing your alloys (like my OH) then get it if you want your car looking good at the end of the year. Definitely do not get any of the extra insurance from your OPC though. Shop around online and you will get the same for half of what they are quoting you.

IIRC wheel cover does not cover diamond cut/finished wheels................unless someone knows different.

They are. Had one repaired under Porsche insurance earlier this year.

Only difference is diamond cut wheels can't be repaired more than once, but this is due to the repair process not the insurance.

If it's a GTS I take it you have centre lock wheel nuts. If so take wheel and tyre insurance. Because the only people who can get the wheel off is porsche or someone with a truck wheel wrench! And porsche will not repair a punctured tyre so make you buy a new one!

The GAP insurance is worth having on a car of this value - I can get 5 years cover with max £75k cover for £570.

Tyre and wheel cover is next in priority, simply because as you say every puncture means a new tyre. In fact I might settle for just tyre cover as the wheels don't cost a fortune to repair. With regard to the centre locks - yes I have them, but I'm planning on removing the wheels myself annually for detailing and applying sealant. I understand it's not so bad with the right tools, I have a breaker bar and a Sealey Torque Multiplier, this means a 'normal' torque wrench can tighten to the necessary 600NM, I have read the instructions on the good to know app and seen videos - and I also have a tin of aluminium anti-seize paste, so I'm all set. The first wheel I do will be interesting - but I am pretty confident it will be OK.

Oh - nearly forgot. Thanks very much to all who have contributed to answering my question - much appreciated!

Just 1 thing to check on the GAP cover. If you have your car insurance with a good provider, they often include "return to invoice" cover for the first 3 years. What this means is that if you have a total loss in the first 3 years they will pay you the amount showing on your invoice with no deduction for wear and tear or age.

Some of the policies that often provide this are:

Aviva Private Clients
Chubb
Hiscox
Covea Executive Motor
Oak Private Clients Family Fleet

You would probably need to go via a broker to get access to these providers. And if you take out a home + car policy they are not as expensive as you might think.

Hope that helps.
