£30 million?

Just how much WD40 are they planning to spray on the thing?

Not sure if WD40 is particularly good for stonework. But I'm not a builder nor an expert in such matters.

H'apparently an MPs committee is getting involved. It seems four year's silence just won't do and they are looking to see if it's necessary.

Once again the non experts get involved because they don't like what they hear(or rather they get all worked up on Facebook, so "something must be done!")
Now I know the government doesn't have the greatest record for getting VFM from contracts but assuming the time scale and costs are correct, and now is a bit late to start arguing that, let people do their job, and not moan because Facebook/DM gets all upset about a national treasure.
99.99% of people don't hear it daily anyway, but I guess there are votes in appeasing the masses

Might need a few.

It does rather beg for someone to park outside the Daily Mail offices with a sound system that plays chimes at an equivalent volume every fifteen minutes, just to see how they react.
I like the way you think.

Nice attempt at condescension.

Would you prefer to hear from the experts instead? The clock company who tended the clock since the 70s? The individual who has worked on it previously?

Silencing it is a nonsense, they say.

I suspect H&S legislation has changed just a little since 1983, and probably a bit since the mid-2000s too so both of them are a bit out of date.

There are also things like duration of the works & length of exposure, and the nature of the work being done.

But hey, lets just drag someone up with out of date experience & take it as gospel.

It's not to say that turning off the bell is really necessary but just pulling someone up who says 'I never had a problem' isn't exactly a strong argument.

I was actually referring to T May & the loads on FB that demand "something must be done!" Thanks for that link, obviously some other experts disagree about the risks, but any decision to change can be based on facts from both sides, not emotion

30 million is a bargain it costs £5.75 million to re tarmac a roundabout and put up some traffic lights in farnborough eek,it also took over 5 years !!!
Makes Big Ben a total bargain.
You have to laugh at all the outrage of it not bonging it's a building and clock that will fall into a pile of rubble if it doesn't get fixed soon rendering it never to bong ever again no

A nation that once prided itself on its engineering capability can't mend/restore/repair Big Ben in under 4 years apparently.

While China has an engineering marvel, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge at just over 26 miles long. The bridge links the port city of Qingdao to the island of Huangdao. It was built from scratch in roughly the same amount of time needed to do the resto to the Bong.

Where the fk did it all go wrong?

Restoring a building like this is incomparable to building a new bridge.

In the time it took to sort the render and timbers out on my place you could have thrown up at least 2 equivalent sized house...

And for the feckin cost of a utility extension I could probably have built two new house too smile (or rather frown).

Also, whether it's 4yrs or just one, the bells chime 4 times an hour and can be heard over a large distance. Even with ear defenders on, I wouldn't want to be working up close and personal with that for any length of time. Whether they did in the 70s and 80s is moot. We did lots of stuff then that wouldn't be countenanced now. I guess we'll never have decent Fred Dibnah style documentaries in the future sadly though.

(As for the MPs, they should be a couple of hundred miles away while all the work's going on. If I were in charge they'd be moved away permanently and the HoC would become a full on tourist attraction).

Exactly. A factory can turn out a new car every couple of minutes, but send you're old car off to a specialist for an extensive restoration, and you won't see if for a few years.

So, um, strange as it may seem but the initial cost estimates for the repairs to Elizabeth Tower have been revised. Most recent forecasts are £61m.

Must be something about parliament buildings and estimating costs
