Government orders crackdown on car and van hire rentals.
Discussion
British drivers will face extra checks when renting cars and vans to ensure they are not extremists in the wake of string of a deadly terror attacks using vehicles.
article said:
Ministers are proposing rental companies share drivers' data with the Government so it could be checked against a terror watch list before a vehicle is released for hire.
Toby Poston, director of external relations at the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA), told the Sunday Telegraph: "The industry is looking at ways to share data with the authorities in as real time as possible so it can be cross-referenced with counter-terrorism watch lists."

What fking nonsense is this, what next, a licence for buying a kitchen knife so you can be 'cross checked against our extremist list'?
See that 'extremist list'? Go and do something about that directly rather than piss about the other 99.99999999% of the population - same goes for the other unworkable, impractical and easily defeated panaceas like blanket email snooping.
Security Theatre? More like security stand-up.

That would involve common sense and work that the computer couldn't do...you can't possibly be suggesting that the counter terrorism units would do something like checking a terror list with boots on the ground, are you?I'm amazed they go to the bother of hiring vans in the first place.
Everyone knows that Elvis has left the building when its comes tackling this problem. All the people in that past that warned what was going to happen. Most of whom underestimated the coming problems where classed as racists bigots.

Announcement.
As from Friday 1 September every member of the public will be required to wear at minimum a) a stab vest and full face protection, or b) full body armour - there are more requirements but too many to list here. A 'book' listing all will be sent to all homes in the UK.
Meanwhile, all properties (no exclusions!) will be required to have a) a moat the full circumference of the property and b) a drawbridge that meets EU regulations before Brexit.
Help and financial assistance will be available for those who need it.
An emergency helpline is available for those above, and for those who spot unidentified hire vans that come on to their drives or property.
End of announcement. Thank you.

Governments always feel they "have to do something".
It's a bit early to write these proposals off just yet but trying to lock down every conceivable avenue for a terrorist is almost impossible.
To anyone with a grain of common sense what the government are doing is making themselves look ridiculous - think deeper about it and it's a bit worrying that they are grasping at such straws, this would indicate that they don't understand what they are dealing with, and they should have had enough practise by now or think the general public are completely stupid. It's a bit early to write these proposals off just yet but trying to lock down every conceivable avenue for a terrorist is almost impossible.
One of the first doctrines I learned as a young squaddy was 'know your enemy', now after 20 years in the security field this seemingly innocuous phrase has become one of the most important cornerstones of operations. Another cornerstone is being adaptable (thanks Darwin) but in this case it is the enemy who will be adaptable - in this case it is quite easy to see that any checks on rentals will mean that they will use other methods like, er, stealing your brothers paperwork and using that, buying a van, stealing a van, getting a van on PCP, forget the van entirely and just use knives/axes etc etc. And that's only if you are or suspect you are on the 'extremist list', which many attackers over the past 18 months haven't been.
I'm mindful of the post-incident enquiry mind-set which would mean you don't want to be criticised over failure in hindsight, but this is a sledgehammer to crack a nutjob. I'd much prefer they made more efforts on targeted intelligence, development of humint and directed flagging for the same price rather than this placebo which operationally accomplishes nothing except to reassure the 10% of the pop that can't think, distances ministers from criticism and increases govt held data from ordinary innocent members of the public.
ETA - sorry Eric - not directed straight at you, just expanding my previous

Not sure vans will solve anything because as people say you can just go buy a shed.
From this event maybe a bit more needs doing about gas canisters (120 stockpiled?!) but I'm saying that never having tried to buy one so maybe there area already checks in place.
Once you go down the route of "trying to regulate every day items which can kill you" you've no chance.

But politicians have to be seen to be doing something! From this event maybe a bit more needs doing about gas canisters (120 stockpiled?!) but I'm saying that never having tried to buy one so maybe there area already checks in place.

Reliance on technology to prevent or detect these attacks will just make you complacent.
Track somebody by their phone? They'll leave it at home.
Decrypt their Whatsapp messages? They'll pass notes by hand.
