I have lowered my 2011 RS by 25mm. I like the lower wider look. I bought 20mm wheel spacers and they rub on the rear. Anyone any experience how wide I can go with wheel spacers before I waste more money? Thanks

When I went to school (pre internet can-you-wipe-my-own-arse-for-me days) we were given one of these things and taught how to use it.

I often wonder how (if) we would survive if the internet were turned off. I think a lot of people would die.
Or at least have very dirty underwear.

Must be bloody big wheel spacers if they rub on the rear!

Yes very good. Difficult to gauge when the suspension is fully compressed.

If the suspension is fully compressed it should be very easy as the wheel will be up in the arch. That aside, if it has been hitting the arch you now have a witness mark there and on the tyre, so equipped with your new found knowledge (and ruler) you will be able to measure how much less you need.

Which is why you do one mod at a time, not 2 together.

I'm always perplexed by people who buy a car like this but clearly care more about the way it looks than the way it drives.

If you understand the suspension design, you can get a pretty good indication of the path the wheel is going to take from the suspension geometry. Once you have traced out the path that the closest points on the tyre are going to take you can see how close the tyre is getting throughout its travel without actually moving the suspension.

If you want a more precise answer, unmounting the spring makes it very easy to try the full range of suspension and steering travel and is how a professional would do it. Alternatively, you can jack up that corner of the suspension (with the wheel still fitted) although the wight of the vehicle relative to suspension stiffness may limit how far you can go.

All these approaches just give you an initial indication of how much clearance there is likely to be and don't account for suspension flex. You would still need to drive the vehicle and check whether there is actually any contact under real world conditions, bearing in mind that there may be extremes of bump and steering that aren't easy to reproduce.

(I'm equally baffled by people who screw up the handling in the pursuit of looks, but it's your car and your choice.)
