Another Brit facing jail in Dubai. I cannot understand the appeal of the place.

Holy, oily countries are wonderful!!!

Beheadings, stonings - it puts Disneyland to shame.

I hope we get some of it over here.

Ironically given the laws they have criminals do like it as a bolt hole.

Indeed, there always is when you get one of these stories, but the haters will just believe this crap and it will make them feel better.

Some of what? There have been no beheadings or stonings since I've been out here. I've been in Dubai for 5 years.

You are sadly misinformed. Maybe you were thinking of a completely different country?

Not that simple for you.

You go to the trouble of reporting lots of newspaper stories.

If it's that simple, just ignore them. That's what I do.

Well, except when responding to people on t'internet.

I'm sure they don't miss you.

Looks like you don't have the time to travel anyway, too busy searching for stories that fit your narrative. I'm sure you could find lots of unpalatable stuff minus the oily people if you looked.

Of course they'd say that, those living there are having their communications monitored!

I have family out there and agree with this. Me and the other half agree if it wasn't for family it's not a place we would choose to spend a holiday.

It is funny if you listen to the media you believe Dubai and the UAE are strict but like you say behind closed doors, anything is permissible. Just don't flaunt what you are doing.

I live there (currently working away) and there is always a different story to the one reported in the tabs, always.

You kinda have to leave some of your scruples at immigration working there but as long as you don't do silly things then the edit population is left largely to their own devices. The police could go through a typical expat apartment block and fill the prisons if they wanted to.

Now and again there's a story like this, it serves as a reminder that you only intended to be there short term and to refocus on your priorities (usually career or monetary based). However it works both ways and you also read the uk news and find stories there which remind you why you left and don't want to go back.

The chap is also due in court for ‘making a rude gesture’. I don’t believe for a minute you bump into someone, even in Dubai, and end up in court. It was a 2 day stop over for a young man who worked in various countries as a sparky. I don’t know but maybe on the lash, loud and a bit silly.

I’ve been to Dubai many times. I’ve never gone out into public bars. Always had a great time.

Don't believe that it is necessarily anything other than as is being reported.

I had to have a 48 hour stopover on the way back from Singapore there, and it did not go well. I was in the airline's cars all them time back and to to a hotel they booked. It was silly hot, I never left the hotel except to go too the police station to give a statement....
When enjoying a single G and T alone in the hotel bar, (quiet), I noticed the barman being beckoned by some locals who wanted to "buy a drink" for three American women who were in there minding their own business. Sure enough, a bottle of fizz goes over, and two of the three girls drink from it, one is not drinking alcohol. Within a few minutes, these two girls are in real trouble, they are completely out of it, and these local guys are all over them. I'm not going to go into details lest to say that within 15 mins I was dragging these guys off two unconcious women in the ladies as they were raping them in the ladies loo.
Next day, a drugs test showed they had been drugged, (one of them worked at a hospital), police were involved, the hotel tried to cover it all up, seemingly they treated me like some sort of hero, but it was just a way of covering it up, barman disappeared and they never gave him up to the police.

I was delayed giving statements and left three days later, then was summoned back for a court case about 2 months later.
meanwhile one of the victims who actually lived there and worked there, had had her passport seized, her BF who worked there on a big Civil Engineering project had had the same, plus he had lost his job. And when I landed for the court appearance I was "detained" at the airport and subject to a draconian interview and search about what I was there for etc.
In the end, I was forced to withdraw my statement and allowed to fly home, and not charged with drinking in public, (one G and T per my bill!) and outraging decency for going into the ladies toilet! This was many years ago, but it sounds like some things don't change.

It's a superficial place, looks all fancy and modern, but it has a sinister, draconian and corrupt side to it, be under no illusion should you wish to visit. if you are a "local" you are fine, you can do what you please, anyone else is fked if they cross a local, it is as simple as that.

Some years later, I found out via Facebook that some time after the incident, after the case was dropped, the woman and her BF did a "bunk" from Dubai. They had booked a return flight home and had their passports released, (Govt own the main airline and most of the hotels, so they know exactly what you are up to), left their cars at the airport and never went back. I cant blame them, since then, I fly to Singapore and HK direct only now and pray we never have to div into Dubai!

I think you mean 'don't come to police attention' rather than don't flaunt what you are doing. For there are more ways to come to police attention than flaunting things.

You could be a woman who gets raped and you come to police attention because you report the rape. In that case, as the rape victim and since being raped means having had sexual outside of marriage, then you may well be jailed.
