I see the latest "news" is a video of Priti Patel in some video conference wrangling a large mug.

That seems to only be in the Daily Mail, other news sources are focusing on her not knowing how many of the 50,000 passengers entering the UK each day are testing positive for Covid19 or how the person leading the report into claims of bullying by her is being moved out. Or reporting how experts advise her points based immigration system won't work.

Sounds like a normal day for Patel. Utterly clueless individual that is fortunate to be in the Gov position she finds herself in.

Struggling to think of another Home Secretary who could be this inept. it's always been a post covered by someone with proven competence: the Thatcher years, John Reid, even Theresa May.

So there we go then, the home secretary who introduced a mandatory 14 quarantine period has no idea of what the risks of importing Covid from abroad actually is. Like everything else at the moment the governments response is not scientifically led, but is made up on the spot, and does little other than damage not only our economy but also our image in the rest of the world. Truly unbelievable that they introduced a policy like that with no data. Literally just made it up.

I would disagree with the always. Blunkett was appalling. My job at the time was reviewing the effects of laws on police procedures. His Criminal Law Act had me struggling. I questioned various high ranking officers with a 'what was meant by' sort of thing, and apparently they were all confused. I toddled off to one of the resident judges to be told I should not bother as the laws were so unworkable as drafted the law would be changed in a couple of months.

The judge, one of the most polite and respectful persons I ever met, tore into Blunkett and destroyed him, all completed in his mild-mannered tone while taking tea with me. Just the sort of bloke you did not want to disappoint.

May was also dreadful. Didn't do anything positive. Patel, though, seems to be working towards a league of her own.

Yvette Cooper taking a leaf out of Keir Starmer's playbook and showing how woefully under prepared the Home Secretary is.

I wonder whether we may see a new era of forensic questioning by the opposition - something sadly lacking in the last 15 to 25 years? We need a strong opposition to ensure good governance.

Not defending any of it but as a side point I think these types of comments are overstated. 'Brexit has made us the laughing stock of the world' or 'our covid handling has made us a laughing stock of the world'.

Maybe among a tiny proportion of the global population who are interested in politics and share your perspective. The majority of the worlds population are likely more concerned with their own personal and then national issues. And then there are those who will completely disagree anyway.

Do you really think the average person on the street in Peru or Uzbekistan is shocked at our handling of covid. Not likely. A lot of houses are on fire at the moment and before covid happened many countries were mired in their own domestic issues some far more damaging than Brexit etc. Even in the developed world where there is relative wealth you have Israel, Greece, Italy USA with Trump etc. I'm sure they all have people who feel they are a laughing stock of the world where as in actual fact with many of them little is known about their issues outside of those interested in politics & those directly affected.

Come on its far funnier than that. The was no quarantine at the hight of infection. So anyone who entered from counties with high level of infections could move around freely until the lock down. Even after lock down if they felt unwell they could travel to Durham. When the quarantine was finally introduced it was long after the hight of the infection and applied to counties where infection level where very low. The system to implement the quarantine was laughable. The government said 10% of cases would be called to ensure they where isolated. No evidence anyone was ever called. Even if they did what check was a call on a mobile? They then promised sky bridge but when no other country seemed interested two weeks later they introduced a list of counties you could enter from and you no longer needed to isolate. They where also clear if you had entered from one of these countries in the previous two weeks you still need to continue to isolate.

If the plot was in a TV comedy everyone would say it was unrealistic.

"What has happened to the report about Priti Patel?"

I don't think there's much point in the government publishing the results of it's own half-arsed investigation if Philip Rutnam's lawyers are going to do the job properly afterwards. They might as well wait for that and then sack her.

Don’t disagree re: Blunkett and May, but Patel somehow manages to plumb new depths of incompetence.

Not among normal people, no, but among politicians, yes. Especially so in places like Portugal, which has been an ally of the UK for hundreds of years and we have traditionally had close ties with, and who's economy is largely reliant on tourists. The infection numbers simply don't make any sense to exclude Portugal from the no quarantine list, it was a few headlines in the days before the list was published which swung the decision. Meanwhile 2 or 3 areas of Spain are in lockdown, as are parts of Germany, and yet they are on the free to travel list. It is illogical decision making without evidence which annoys people and makes us look daft, and many people in Portugal - politicians and anyone in the tourist trade - thought that all the common sense traditionally associated with the UK had gone out the window.

Oh I agree totally. I would love to know how the decision making process works in the Home Office, or more largely the government in general? What person thinks that having not restricted access to the UK from China, Spain and Italy when thousands of people per day were being infected, now that those countries have very low levels of infection and the UK is the most affected place in Europe, NOW is the time to insist on quarantine measures?! It's unbelievable - even Yes Prime Minister didn't have such illogical ideas and that was supposed to be funny. This on the other hand is our health, economic and social futures we are talking about.

Is there anyone here who knows or has encountered Priti Patel in person who can comment on her? Is she your MP, do you know her socially, through friends, through university? Is she actually good at anything - capabilities, strengths, weaknesses? What were the two other things she wished for when she met the genie?

She should have wished for a smaller arse or a bigger head.
