My wife has one and as a little city car that you only very rarely take on long journeys they make perfect sense.

Aside from the known problem with the automated clutch linkage I don't think there is anything mechanical wrong with them, second hand ones are cheap to buy and they are fuel efficient.
I was in Rome a few years ago and they are incredibly popular over there. Horses for courses.

Issue must be known because it's mentioned in the Honest John review of the original LHD model . Here is the link, last item https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/smart/fortwo...

I think we're being a harsh, I nearly did something similar in the summer; I'd left the sunroof open and mistakenly took it for the fuel filler and bunged the nozzle in, only a nearby hero prevented me filling up the interior will super unleaded.

Petrol pump wasn't on fire when she got in!

By flames outside perhaps? Same as people get trapped inside rooms by flames the other side of the door.
Nope, according to the Daily Heil, she was trapped by the petrol pump getting in the way. It obviously beamed itself into position from space seconds after she'd climbed in.

'I couldn't get out because I had parked so close to the pump.

I cannot work out how she has done this, the air intake cover does not come off?

Easily done. Convertibles ought to be banned for this very reason.

True. Easy to mix up petrol and diesel, no size restrictor with the roof down.

My first job when I was in school, a hundred years ago was filling cars.
And a Humber Super Snipe came in. "Fill 'er up", said the driver.

Well they had this funny filler cap in the rear light cluster on the right hand side.

I managed to unscrew the reflector on the left hand side and filled his boot with petrol.

Not my best day at work.
