And it appears that 'watching the kids', even if someone had been, did not include ensuring no guns were lying about. Surely you ensure nothing seriously dangerous is in reach of a 4 year old. Kitchen knives, pans of boiling water, guns, whatever. Especially something that they will mistake for a toy.
There in lies the problem with a vocal part of the pro-gun US. They don't think guns are dangerous and should be treated with respect. They see their guns as not just a right, but a perfectly safe toy, completely different to a knife, pot of boiling water, bleach, et al. which are kept away from kids because they might hurt themselves.I'm no opponent of recreational shooting, done a bit myself but handing a firearm, even for recreation, is a serious responsibility. Allowing kids to handle firearms without strict supervision, absolutely fking stupid.

This is all nonsense. In a society that has shooter drills for schoolkids, metal detectors and bullet proof school backpacks rather than gun controls. In a country where the biggest cause of death to children is firearms

I used to collate reports of air accidents from around the world. One thing that was apparent was that there was a disproportionately high percentage of pilots who, for no apparent reason, flew into mountains in the USA, particularly the west coast. I took to leaving them off totals as it biased the conclusion so just stuck with commercial passenger airliners, but the reports of single-engined crashes in the US sort of haunted me.I'm no opponent of recreational shooting, done a bit myself but handing a firearm, even for recreation, is a serious responsibility. I spoke with an American member of the equivalent of our AAIB as he came to my airport, mentioning my confusion. He called it the NRA group. I asked him to explain. He reckoned that many people think it is their constitutional right to fly airplanes, and anyone who tried to stop them is an enemy of the people. So they get in their planes, refuse to complete the normal series of checks, including lodging flightplans and checking the fuel tanks(!) and take off.
The chap reckoned that they were forever pulling bits of pilots out of the snow because the didn't want to conform to the 'man's' demands. They knew their rights. Hence NRA.

Hardly even worth mentioning these days as it's just a single fatality. But a four year old girl has been shot and killed with a semi-automatic pistol in Texas on Sunday evening.
She was shot by her three year old sister.

Five adults present... five! And they all thought someone else in the group was watching the kids. Clearly what was needed was a good toddler with a gun. She was shot by her three year old sister.

Gonzalez added that the killing illustrated the need for owners of guns to be responsible with their weapons
Incredibly sad that he needs to even have to say this, 5 adults in the house and the brain dead fools haven't the mental capacity to have any loaded firearms locked away. Their reaction being that that thought someone else was watching them. A 3 yr old having to grow up knowing she shot and killed her sibling. What a sorry mess.

What a mess. I was readimg earlier that apparently almost a third of US adults believe there would be less crime if more people owned guns. With that mentality its an irreversible situation or at least a monumental challenge to chamge anything, certainly politically.
100 mass shootings by the first week of March. Says it all.
Seems Joe Biden has at least taken some kind of action.

This is all nonsense. Take a look at this series of photos of us kids with their first gun. Try really hard to think about what your major concerns where below the age of 12, and then think about these kids.

Having lived in the US for 15-ish years, it's still a confusing place that flies (pun intended) in the face of normal logic you have in other more developed countries.
Meanwhile, we learn that previously unreleased investigative interviews with police officers who responded to the Uvalde school shooting revealed they abandoned their plan to quickly confront the gunman after learning a crucial piece of information: He was armed with an AR-15. “He has a battle rifle”
They were unwilling to confront the AR-15 on the other side of the door.

This (almost) beggars belief:They were unwilling to confront the AR-15 on the other side of the door.

Ruben Torres, who saw what the rifle can do in combat while serving as a Marine infantryman in Iraq and Afghanistan, never imagined someone would use it to try and kill his daughter, Khloie, who was wounded by bullet fragments at Robb Elementary.
The Corps spends so much time drilling firearm safety into Marines that Torres can recite the rules from memory. Even now, he has no objection to civilians owning AR-15s, but he thinks they should be required to complete training like soldiers because too many who buy one treat it like a toy.
“You get people that never served in the military or law enforcement, and yet they’re wannabes,” Torres said. “They purchase this weapons system, not having a clue how to use it, the type of power and the level of maturity needed to even operate it.”

The paper says that the bullets from a .226 calibre rifle would punch straight through the officer's body armour like a hole punch through paper. They were unwilling to confront the AR-15 on the other side of the door.

I'm in no way an expert but that Sky News reporter that was ambushed by Russian troops in Ukraine, later found 6 bullets lodged in his body armour.
I presume the Russians were using AK military rifles of the same 'punch' as an AR.
Easy to say from the safety of my phone but I think those US cops were all pussies.
If kids were in danger I would hope that I'd be happy to take a big risk in helping them.
Maybe they were only wearing pretend cardboard body armour.
