Hi guys,

I am planning to get an F80 M3 soon however as I am 25 with 6 points I got a few quotes and my premium is coming up around 4k which is very high.

I was thinking about buying a smart car and getting full comp insurance (with a company that allows me to drive any car). Will I have any issues with the driving the M3 then?

The M3 will have fully comp insurance with my Dad.

Thanks in advance

Don't do this ffs.

Just delete your post and be done with it, before the sanctimonious horde arrives.

Google "Fronting" and most but not all companies allow you to drive another car WHICH IS NOT OWNED BY YOU - and gives 3rd party cover only.

Quoted because I'm a bd.

You shouldn't.

And if you crash it, I suspect the insurance company will give you a hard time over who is ACTUALLY the owner and main driver.

Most policies that are fully comp won't fully comp other vehicles at the same address, mine is TPO for cars registered at my main address.

I'd be surprised if most do. It seems relatively unusual nowadays and those that do often state for emergency use only.

I'm not actually sure if the other bit would be considered 'fronting' or not as the father would be insuring the car in his name only. Dodgy as can be though and heaven help you if you have to make a claim or worse, you have an at fault accident, and only have third party cover on a very valuable car.

It's a terrible idea I'm afraid.

You would only be covered for 3rd party damage anyway.

When your fully comp insurance allows you to drive any other car, the other car has to be insured by someone, and you only get 3rd party cover on that car. Not fully comp.

Sensible Answer:
Why not get something cheaper to insure for a couple of years until the M3 insurance is more reasonable? Doesn't have to be dull, use your imagination and try getting a few quotes for various cars (older M3, MX5, T6 Volvo, Monaro, Mazda MPS, CTR, etc)* - you might find something fun/interesting which isn't too bad on insurance.

PH Answer:
If you can afford a £30k+ car then pay up the £4k insurance and be properly insured

*I have no idea what the insurance costs on those would be, I'm just trying to suggest alternatives to a BMW

Surely the cost of a buying Smart car plus your Dad's insurance on the M3 won't be that far off the £4k insurance and a hell of a lot more hassle and potential grief when it all goes wrong...

I think the others have covered it; don't do it - it is basically fraud.

The any car cover is usually for vehicles you don't own, and also they must be insured on their own policy.

My advice is to have a think about the M3 as well - at least until you have less points. I know what it's like at 25 and you're going to be really tempted/feel the need to wring it out, and in an F80 you're well into prison territory a lot of the time.

Have a look at something you can insure yourself; something you can take on a good thrashing without going deep into three figures.

that would be fraud, the insurance on the M3 would state that your dad is the sole/primary driver, this is clearly not the case

Is that all?

Still, it'll be a lot higher with an uninsured ban and a cancelled policy behind you.

Most do for over 25's. I've never seen it stated that it's for emergency use only.

What's the problem? OP will have 3rd party cover so everyone else is OK. Anyway he'll know he isn't going to crash it himself. rolleyes

Fraud or fronting; but by any name, insurance companies can smell it miles away.

Even if you paid the 4k to insure it, with 6 points and an M3, how long do you think it'll be before that's 12 points and a ban?

Can't remember who my wife is insured with but her's states emergency use only. So she can't drive my car. Which is nice smile

and if he went through with what he proposes, the car being an M3 do you think it would be more likely to be the target of a "random traffic check" by the police... they check the insurance and oh, that's not the person on the insurance.

OP you will get caught. Cough the insurance money up. Or get a slightly higher mileage car that's 4K cheaper. Whatever
