Hi all

About to get new tyres all round for my 996.2 C2 but I am completely confused as to what the correct size for the rears is and also what N rating both front and rear should have. The front size seems clear at 225/40R18. But for the rear my internet research has found:

- 255/40R17

- 265/35R18

- 285/30R18

So which size is correct / which one should I get? My current rears are 285 and the rears also have spacers (I'm not sure what size as they were on when I bought it). The official Porsche fitment guide (which I have downloaded) states both 265 and 285 for the rears. This website seems to suggest you should have 285 rears with spacers:

http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/information/fitti...

Once size is sorted, my brand preference is to go with Michelin, but what N rating is the correct one and which tyre!?

I will probably go black circles unless someone has a cheaper recommendation!

All help gratefully received.

Many thanks.

Richard

I assume you have 18 inch wheels based on your front size. If so then the first rear size you list will be no good as it is for a 17 inch wheel.
The 265/35 18 was the size for the 996.1carrera (3.4) whilst the 285/30 was the size for the 996.2 Carrera (3.6).
Depending on your wheel width it is likely you can fit either size to your car.

The N rating number is increased as the design for that particular tyre is updated. You want the same tyre type front and rear with Ideally the same N number. (Definitely the same N number on each axle).

If you want Michelin then your choices in those sizes and N rated is limited I think to PS2 (which are very good on a 996.

Thanks a lot that's very clear. I wanted Michelin because that seems to be the consensus as being the best tyre. Do you have a recommendation of where to order from (I would ideally want a fitted price) as Blackcircles don't seem to have an N rated 285.

Why bother with the N rating? If it’s a 996 you say - I don’t suppose you’re running under a Porsche warranty at this point so I don’t see the need for it. Might open up a few more tyre choices for you too

Correct not under warranty. However, I've heard of a few people having big arguments and stress with insurers trying not to pay out in the event of an accident. The people eventually won the argument and the insurer paid out but I wouldn't want the hassle.

Do you know what the price of a full set was?

£646 fitted but that was about a year ago. Think they were cheaper than the previous ones though.

I have heard rumours of issues with insurers over non N rated tyres, but never heard any proof of this so am sceptical. The Porsche extended warranty is different, I am referring to the car insurance.
Although I am not hard over on having N rated tyres on my 996, my PS2 are N rated as they were no more costly than the non N rated version.

Good choice & that price sounds fair, especially in London.
