Article in the Times.

Iceland is looking at a proposal to ban non medical circumcision, to protect the child's rights.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me, Jews and Muslims are up in arms as that would make their ancient outdated practise illegal.

If they aren't cut at birth, does God strike them down with a lightening bolt?

If at 18 they make the decision to be cut, will God accept them or are they outcast for ever ?

In an era of constant offence, surely we should be able to ban this practise and move forward.

As I understand it, circumcision was originally designed specifically to protect the health of the child.

If you look at both that and the dietary commonalities of Islam and Judaism when set against a background of a hot climate, no refrigeration and little water, they make rather more sense. Consider then that at the time these rules were bought in, religious leaders were typically the most educated and respected members of their communities, and it makes a lot of sense for them to introduce these sensible practices as religious rules.

Fast forward to the 21st century and it's really not necessary any more, so I'd fully agree with the notion of banning circumcision of minors.

On the other hand, I'd be thoroughly opposed to banning it for adults, as people should have control over their own bodies in adulthood.

Logically the ban would be entirely reasonable if done to protect the rights of the child. The religious can do what the hell they want to themselves but should not impose it on others. At 8 days, a child has no religion.

However . . .

I, like everyone I suppose, can see problems.

One positive is that the western catholic church, or at least its CEO, has come out in support of those churches which prefer such actions.

A good decision in protecting children.

For me, anyone claiming a religious right to cut off a boy’s tickle-tackle in the name of a god is quite bereft of reason. The complete abuse of girls due to dodgy community customs in slicing off labia is also beyond any touchstone of civilised behaviour.

For medical reasons? - ie to treat a phimosis - then ‘fair do’ if it is necessary.

About time - I was wondering when people would remember that its not just girls that suffer from GM and boys having their bits chopped off in the name of religious offering has been going on for far too long.

Should only be allowed for medical reasons only. If you want your schlong end chopped off then by all means pay for it when your 18, bet it wont appeal so much then !

I read this story and couldn't help but think of the similarities with US gun laws.

A load of fanatical nut jobs defending something that if looked at logically is just stupid.

Good for Iceland. I hope they succeed where Denmark failed. It should be outlawed globally and be condemned in the same way that ritualistic female genital mutilation is.

It won't ever happen here sadly as there are too many powerful Jew and Muslim groups who just absolutely love lopping bits off their childrens' cocks and want to protect their right to do so. The barbaric savages. And I say that as someone who is married to a Jewish woman and I have told her unequivocally that she won't be doing that to our children!

All the Feminists up in arms about FGM whilst this has been going on in civilised countries all along.

Well done Iceland.

Oh fking yawn. Everything you do affects your children, nut just circumcision. Living in a city. Eating processed food. Breathing in engine fumes. Being exposed to high levels of ionising radiation when you take a flight. But you are too thick to think of that and just jizzed yourself into a lather about your personal crusade.

I take it you're snipped and/or you had the same done to your children?

Loping bits off babies genitalia isn't really comparable to any of that.

I
Ban it, certainly. Putting male circumcision in the same class as FGM is completely wrong. The results of the two are not comparable in the degree of barbarity.

Personal situations are irrelevant. A third to half the males on the planet are circumcised. I was just replying to your post, which was monumentally stupid. I like how you just laid down the law to your wife instead of talking about it. Bit rich if you to call everyone else savages then, isn't it champ?
