This seems a bit harsh, four years in prison for chasing down a thief. Thief not charged with theft. Must be more to this?

An extreme reaction yes, but why wasn't the thief prosecuted?

Doesn't send out the right message re bicycle theft does it?

Probably because 2+tonne vehicle against squishy person is a bit OTT.

If he'd ran after him and given him a slap ,court wouldn't have been so harsh on him.

If he’d ran after him and given him a slap he might have been stabbed or blinded with acid.

Is that really in the interest of safety for the general public? Seems totally disproportionate to me...

Quite sad, when one considers how little time recent killers by car have gotten.

Couldn't that famous car lawyer who gets celebs off speeding charges have taken this on as a freebie.

" He said he thought the bike, which turned out to belong to McKnight’s then girlfriend, had been abandoned when he found it in Tullibody and took it to get to his mother’s house in Menstrie with his friend, who had his own bike.

He added that he was not planning on keeping it. "

LOL

Still, the 4x4 driver was OTT

What's the alternative?

Is it allowing people to use unreasonable force / use force in revenge?

I don't think people would be too keen on that for long.

Very true, and very worrying.

If the Police forces budgets continue to be cut and they no longer have the manpower to deal with crimes, which IS happening, this will be the result.

If the public feel the Police are no longer interested/dealing with crimes, eventually people will feel the need to protect them selves and their property in any way they feel they have to.

Of course running someone down with a car is very unreasonable.
