What possessions have you given away or binned that you have later come to regret in later years? I can think of a few:

  • Original metal Meccano– got rid prob late 80s when I was too old for it. The new stuff my sons has is nowhere near as good
  • Lego Technical set – I actually kept it (was the one from the 1980s where you could build the car or the dragster) -original box and 99% parts still there. But I made the mistake of giving it to my son when he was too young for it, and consequently most of the bits have got mixed in with the other Lego and the box got trashed
  • Hacker record player – got rid (as in took to jumble sale) 25+ years ago when helping my mum have a clear out. In retrospect, it was a lovely old thing that belonged to my late father. I see identical ones on eBay go for really strong money!

I gave away my TVR Tasmin about 10 years ago.
Wish I'd kept it and upgraded the engine.

Trouble is, the alternative is that you just end up with a load of stuff, like I have. I'm not close to being featured on TV for it, but there are things I wish I could do a better job of culling.

Me, is that me? biggrin

Every time I repurpose something that was sitting in a cupboard for ages, I think, "Thank God I didn't throw that away!"

Me. I was binned by a girl once and I wish she hadn't...

Also (mostly by parents when I left home):
Wood and brass plate camera.
Wind up gramophone.
Fish tank (don't know where the fish went).
The bodywork from a half-finished Tamiya 1:12 Porsche 'Moby Dick' kit.
School reports.
Vinyl record collection.
Afghan coat.
Reel to reel tape deck.
Collection of Oz magazines.

Probably much more but I've lost my memory too... nuts

Many years ago and living with my girl friend in our first house, one Sunday we discovered that a hose had split on the spin dryer of the twin tub washing machine someone had given us. Cue, flooded kitchen.
I don't really know why as my mum had never had a twin tub bet I decided to ask my dad if he had a hose that might do.
It was a moulded, specially formed piece.

My dad, had me follow him to his garden/coal shed where he opened the door and started to reach in.
The shed was so full of stuff, he couldn't actually step inside.
As he pushed one foot inside, something kept rolling against his foot, which he kept kicking back inside.I asked his what it was and, casually glancing down he said it was the neck of an old Edison Cylinder Player!!!

Anyway he stepped back out and in his hand was the exact hose I needed!!!!.................How the hell???????????......Thanks dad. smile
I still smile about that one.

I threw out an old Barometer the Mrs had a good few years ago that looked totally knackered to me. I’ve since found out it was a Georgian Stick Barometer that was still probably worth about £400 even in the state it was in. Oops.

I’ve never told her though wink

My Triumph 2000, values haven’t gone exactly stratospheric, but 10 years ago I paid £640 for a car with a long mot and in reasonably good condition. Today that would be various bits of 2000, and a really good one seems to be £5000!

My brother is a pro DJ so for decades got sent 12" white label vynil records by record companies. He also bought loads of stuff himself. His garage was piled high with 1000's of records.

When he moved house he binned 90% of it. He just didn't want to move 1000's of records from one garage to another, and by then CD's were becoming standard for DJ's.

I was helping home move so we were literally filing our cars with records, and driving to the local tip. I didn't get have any space as I'd just moved I to a tiny house with no garage.

Even back then it felt wrong frown

An ammo box full of matchbox cars , the full set of no 1 to 72 ,all as new in boxes with the period catalogue .
Given away to family friends that were in dire straights so they had something for their little lad at Christmas.
Not really ever regretted the gesture just a little wince when I see them on Internet sites these days .

I gave away an e-type steering wheel which I originally picked up for 50p at a boot sale. I can't even remember who I gave it to.

Got sent instead of Beano on sub for first two years until realised was just piling up under bed.

Got binned totally untouched by more than dust some tme in late '90's in massive tidy up that makes me cry almost as the CSL Dad sold for £14kish about same time!

A "Keegan's Kicker" Soap on a Rope circa 1981.

Kept it in the loft for 26 years, moved house in 2007 and chucked it out.

The week after the house move we took a holiday in Cornwall, strolled round some nice gardens and discovered, I kid you not, the National Soap Museum.

Hell, they even had a sign up asking for exhibits and the nearest thing to mine was a 1986 World Cup Soap on a Rope in the shape of a football.

Talking of comics given away, Harold Hedd 'Hitlers cocaine'. I would love to have that back to read again!
