This light has appeared whilst driving a couple of times over the past week or so. But later when I start the engine and drive its gone.

Is this one of those Italian bugs in the system/loose cables, or does it warrant a trip to the garage? many thanks, Lord

What a lucky chap you are if you've never seen one of these before.

The check engine light. It tells you nothing of any detail by itself, and is a catch-all for a long list of possible causes. There should have been a fault code generated when the light came on, so the dealer / specialist should be able to tell you what the actual fault is.

Indeed. Thanks. I called the dealer. Essentially, as long as its not lit up in red then its not an emergency.

Is the car still in Warranty? It may not be red but it is claiming that there is a problem, might be worth asking them to check what the problem was (it should tell them what caused it to light up)

What car? On Ferrari’s it can be as daft as the petrol cap not been on tight enough (according to av engineering/Sam from stg)

depending on what car it is (maybe a 360?), it might be the sensor that deals with cats overheating (was faulty quite often on my 355).
as mentioned as long as it is not red, not overly concerning. Disconnect battery and reconnect might be an option to see if it clears itself
Still would get it checked out, but no reason to flatbed the car for now

The dreaded CEL seems to be a fact of life for ageing Italian exotics. Having said that it is lit for a reason and the cause should be looked at to see if any remedial actions need to be taken.

The petrol cap thing isn't limited to Ferrari - all modern vehicles have a way of ensuring fuel vapours are not released into the atmosphere. The car checks to ensure that everything is working properly and if the cap is left loose then it will think there is a leak and will let you know.

its on an aventador s.
The light has since gone away again..which is comforting. The car is in warranty for several more years.

That light does seem to be a 'catch all' - ie. Its the car telling you: "something maybe wrong with me so take me to a dealer who will keep the car for 2 days and rip your b*lls off just to connect to a laptop and remove the light code - thanks"

Get Bluetooth canbus reader off eBay and read the codes. If it's a stupid evaporation code from the exhaust you can carry on.
Cars have so many sensors everywhere and try have tight limits to trigger a code.
