No hard shoulder these days
The guy has pulled over as best he can, and presumably done what he's had to do while trying to sort out what to do with it.
Luckily the police took the car to the pound out of the way

Whats the tiny yellow car in front of shot? The guy has pulled over as best he can, and presumably done what he's had to do while trying to sort out what to do with it.

I don't get the hate for smart motorways.
What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.
There are plenty of multi lane A roads that cope perfectly well without.a hard shoulder.
Agreed. Especially when you look at the different types of smart motorways. What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.

I only use lane 1 on smart motorways if I can see clearly ahead & not following other traffic (which is quite often) as nobody else uses lanes 1 or 2 most of the time. I would not use lane 1 without Waze on in all honesty especially at night.

That could be a thread on its own I was thinking Volvo 850 but the scale is wrong.
Scale wise, the car on it's ns looks like a megane or laguna estate?

If you've run out of fuel, you're an idiot.
You may well be, but currently it's not an offence you can be charged with saaby93 said:

Try working on any part of the motorway network smart or not. What's the point in having 1 lane permanently out of action just in case there is a breakdown. Its better to have it out of action only when needed.

The standard of driving and observational skills of the average motorist is scary at 30mph in a built up area nevermind at 70+
Smart motorways are a nightmare but would be better if more traffic officers to attend and faster but alas that’s very unlikely to happen.
Slow down move over

So your cambelt snaps, or you have a blowout, you have three young children in the back, one in a baby seat, there is no refuge for nearly a mile, and lorries are thundering up behind at 60mph.
Smart Motorways are safe? Poppycock.
And how is this any different to the same thing happening on an A road? Except an A road doesnt have people actively monitoring it, who have the ability to shut lanes in a heart beat. Smart Motorways are safe? Poppycock.
95% of the time, motorway capacity is up by a third. The space is used more effectively. If people pay attention to what's happening in front of them, they are almost certainly safer than most roads.
I don't understand the hate for them. Unless its as a result of people getting photographed for ignoring speedlimits that they consider unnecessary (despite them having zero knowledge of what is beyond the distance they can see)
I drive up and down tat stretch all week and have for the last 12 years.
Apart from the it’s Friday let’s crash at junction 21crowd because I’m going to wait till the last minute and sweep across 5 lanes
The I lrovemnt has been great. Instead of traffic jam every day it’s just Friday now and not every Friday.

Maybe you could explain how a fire engine is able to get through four lanes blocked with bumper to bumper traffic to get to a family trapped in a burning car? Also what happened to hiring families now when they get trapped on dual carriageway A roads with no hard shoulder?
In Germany I have noticed that whenever a motorway jam occurs ,all the vehicles in lane 3 or next to the central
res move right over to the central res to create a wide gap for emergency vehicle access whether it's required or not.
Problem I can see if the British did this is that some entitled folk would use this gap for their own purposes to make progress.
