Quick background I'm 38 and I have always had a love affair with anything with an engine over my 21 years of driving I have had some great cars evo tommi mak, and some less so great cars daewoo nexia🤔
But now I'm quite happy with my e61 530d remapped a boxster s and a 1989 astra gte 16v (it does need restoring) oh and a vivaro.
But ever since I found out about the golf r I seem to be obsessed with it 2 guys at work have a 7 and a 7.5 and I've driven both amazing!!
But would it be worth getting rid of the bmw for one? The bm is fully loaded hud, dab, wood loads of spec but she's a big car and 9 times out of ten it's just me in it, but then the golf would be 15-18k more than the bmw to buy and would a miss the lazy 30d torque and its still a quick car, but then there is the diesel charging stuff going on st the moment, would the golf become boring after a while? And once rolling how quick are they?

Depends on the mileage you're doing and whether fuel economy is that important to you? I imagine the 530d will be a lot more efficient than the Golf.
Same with emissions - are you regularly travelling somewhere which has, or is likely to introduce, some sort of charging scheme any time soon. Don't forget that when it comes to emissions, it might be (older) diesels in the firing line at the moment, but petrols will be targeted before too long.

Only you can say for certain if it will fit your needs. What sort of mileage are you looking at as, despite all the bells and whistles a BMW 530 is always going to be the better cruiser.

Once rolling you've got a relatively heavy car with a relatively small blown engine so this is where other things will catch up and overtake,

They’re great. I considered one to replace the wife’s TT but she wasn’t keen.
However the big thing for me would be where you live and the likelihood of theft. As an example Newcastle where I live doesn’t seem to bad for this whereas parts of Yorkshire and the Northwest are ripe with it - personally I don’t want the risk for me or my family of me being required to dominate the stairs b

To be honest the mileage I do does not warrant a diesel around max 8k per year.
There are no golf r's around my way (new forest) so hopefully the theft thing won't be a problem but that is a concern.

The seat looks horrible inside and is only 2wd and the rs looks far to chavy the ultimate for me would be a rs3 but they are stupid money.

A Golf R will be as fast a Hot Hatch as anyone could really need. Whilst others might be faster, the difference between 300 and 350bhp is much less than 150 and 200bhp for instance. Day to day I doubt you would really notice unless driven back to back.
The BMW might be a much nicer cruiser, but the Golf won't be bad in that regard either.

Certainly not, you'll never have a boring night's sleep again. Nothing's more exciting than being unable to sleep and/or being woken up at 3am by masked raiders lobbing concrete slabs through your french windows intent on stealing the golf. Get one, especially if you can 'dominate' your stairs, they are far from boring.

Though I doubt it, sometimes smoke can be down to less catastrophic things, I remember my dad thinking he had blown my uncles Vauxhall Magnum 2.3 up as there was a mass of smoke but the dipstick had popped out and oil had sprayed from the hole onto a hot manifold.

Awesome machines though.
I bought an R 18-months ago, coming from a VXR and EP3.
Its sensible day to day, will get you 27-30mpg easy if that's a concern, quiet and comfortable on long runs, and even the base models are spec'd well. I'd recommend the DSG as in parallel with the ACC heavy traffic is no longer a hassle. Servicing / maintenance / wear-and-tear parts are the cheapest I've had in years, but Id recommend using a specialist over VW, and doing the haldex and DSG well in advance of what VW recommend.
The R is not half as much fun as the VXR or EP3, but it strikes a balance between fun and comfort. The R Oweners FB group is suprissingly helpful and informative for an owners group.
