Hi all
I currently find myself without a camera (other than iPhone)

Over the years, I've had mostly Canon EOS

(5d, 7d, 1d, etc, plus a few white lenses)

I don't have the same motivation I used to have for photography, and certainly don't have the time.

I'd like to get a camera system again, as I do miss it.

However, what with the new mirrorless cameras, I'm not sure which path to take.

I suppose the first question I need to answer is what do I shoot;
well, everything !
landscapes, motorsport, portraits... the list is endless really

How do the the current mirrorless cameras stack up against say my last DSLR camera - a 5dmk3 - ?

I know its very difficult to suggest a camera system, I'm just looking for first hand examples & experience
thanks

I’m a canon user who likes to shoot landscapes, however if I was buying a new DSLR system I’d look at the nikon850 which to me , even as a canon user, looks a better camera
However the new mirrorless are the future, in that sense from my understanding , forget the Nikon’s, seemed they dropped a ball, the canon is very good ( has the same sensor as the 5mkiv ) but the Sony ar3 wears the crown still
For how much longer who knows, it is expected in 2019 that canon will release a higher end mirrorless and that could surpasss the Sony, perhaps
If more of a budget and aps c appeals then I believe the Fuji is supposed to be good with a nice retro feel to the camera
That’s my take on the current systems any how, lots more knowledgable people on here wil assist you I’m sure

I've moved from 35 years SLR (17 DSLR) to mirrorless, and wouldn't go back. (Currently Sony A7R MkII)

I take portraits professionally and do general shooting (landscapes, seascapes things etc) for pleasure.

I moved from Nikon (crop) to the Sony A7iii based on the reviews and the belief that mirrorless is the future. I was actually considering the D850 at the time too but asked myself the burning question do I actually NEED the extra resolution, and the answer was no.

It was the focus system on the A7iii that attracted me (especially the eye focus), which is more or less the same as on the A9 with virtually edge to edge cover. Frame rate, battery life, custom buttons and a lot more besides make it a great camera in the field.

I added the 70-200 f2.8 GM and the4 24-70 F2.8 GM lens too and I have not looked back. Certainly wouldn't go back to DSLR now after 8 months of use.

Of course you have not mentioned budget, but if you are looking at Sony then compare the A7iii with the A7Riii before pressing the button, it may actually be a better bet for you unless you really need that extra resolution.

I'd be interested to see how this plays out too.

I've got a 7D and a 450D body, plus a variety of lenses. I'm wondering whether it's worth sticking the bodies on eBay along with a couple of the lenses I don't really use and then getting an EOS M5 plus EF lens adapter?

Compared to the bodies I've got, which should go for a combined £400 or so on eBay, I don't really see a downside to the M5? Is there any way in which it's not better?

I'm currently using a 5DSR for stills and a GH5 for video. I was disappointed with the specs on the new EOS R and am now hoping for a pro version of the Canon mirrorless.

The only issue with Canon's mirrorless cameras is the lack of EF-M lenses, the range is small. If using the EF adapter you also have to factor in the 1.6x cropped sensor so an 50mm EF is more like 80mm.

As it would be on the 7D and 450D quoted?

Fuji have a couple of performances crop mirrorless, the xt3 and the other one, both are crop sensors.

Otherwise the a7 Mk3 is probably the best full frame unless you want to spend on the a9

The 5d3 was OK for af and speed, it's sensor is seriously out classed by everything else now.

I still find Canon ergonomics and actual use better than anything else

I recently moved from a 1DMkIII which has been abused throughout it's life to a Canon M50 mirrorless.

I bought it with the EF adaptor which allows me to use all the existing EF lenses I have.

Only two things I've noticed about the M50 is that its not going to be as splash proof as the 1D was and secondly the fast moving tracking focus doesn't have the pace that the 1D did.

Touch screen features are nice as is the transfer via Wifi to your Iphone. Batterylife is nowhere near the 1D as you're either using the LCD screen on the back or the LCD through the viewfinder. No way round that unfortunately - buy some additional batteries and it's sorted.

Does tend to get lost on the end of a 100-400 though

Sorry, yes, you're right, they're cropped too, so no difference. Except for the need for an additional adapter, mirrorless cameras like the M5 will have a much shorter battery life than the equivilent DSLR though.

I'm here too. 5d3 with a selection of L glass (17-40 f/4 ; 24 -105 f/4 and 100-400 f/4-5.6 Mk1)

I'm considering chopping the whole lot in for a mirrorless system, but after spending a week under very wet canvas I'm not so sure. True the weight was an issue, but pulling the body and lens out of several inches of water and it working is something I would miss.

So, new eco-system or keep with a perfectly good combo? Man maths is going to have to work overtime.

If you've got the cash, why not the mirrorless body and adapter most of the time, with the old body to fall back on when the weather demands?

Genuine query, why did you not buy the EOS R, as surely that is more of an equivalent camera in the range compared to the M50. If its budget, then fair enough smile

That lens a beast! Someone clocked me on the head with one of those at Whipsnade the other week. It hurt! biggrin

Because I'd had the M50 for a few months before the EOS R was announced. I'm glad in a way as the little M50 still shoots faster than the EOS R.

A few months ago I went from a big heavy bag of Canon gear, 5D (which was the bought to replace an even heavier 1D) and a load of L lenses, to a Fuji X-T2. I am enjoying photography again! I'm taking loads more pictures, as the kit is lighter, and smaller.

I'm more than happy with the image quality from the little Fuji, the X-T3 is meant to be even better too! I also like that Fuji do weather sealed bodies/lenses, as I did like the ruggedness of my old 1D.

I've currently got an option to trade in my 7D and a Tamron 28-75 that I've not used for ages for £360. Add in double cashback of £140 from Canon when redeemed before December 3rd, and I can change to an EOS M50 with an EF lens adapter for about £120, which feels like something of a foregone conclusion!

I reckon if I stick my 28mm f1.8 on the front of that, I'll use it infinitely more than I currently do the 7D. smile

Just back from the Post Office having shipped off in addition to my 7D and Tamron 28-75 a Sigma 10-20, Manfrotto tripod and head and large Tamrac camera bag which should net me £620 trade in value towards a new Canon EOS M50, EF to M lens adapter and 11-22mm M zoom.

The storage space saving alone is going to be massive! hehe

I have to say, I really don't understand the economics of it all though. I checked the sold prices on eBay for what I'm trading in, and once you subtract their fees and the like, I don't see how I could've got any more selling second hand, and that's without the potential hassle of getting a dodgy buyer. I'm not really clear on how Wex make money out of giving me the trade in, especially when there are Canon promos running which will give me a further £140 back on the camera body and £45 on the adapter. Surely they must be passing a chunk of that hit on to their distributors as well?

I went from Cannon APS to Olympus mirroless a few years ago. Have to say i don't miss the extra bulk of the Cannon gear. If your interested in telephoto lens the mirroless systems gets you far more reach per £ simply because of the crop factor.

Olympus and Panasonic lens are all cross compatible, plenty of weather sealed pro gear to splash your ££££ on if you want.

The smaller form factor is great for traveling, and AF/noise are now on par with APS systems to a point I doubt your notice unless you pixel peep.

These were taken with the pancake kit lens from my OMD EM 5 II, total size when powered off is smaller than just the body of a 550D.

But these days I nearly do all my photos on the phone purely because playing with a camera and having to look after a toddler isnt compatible. Just got a S9 and been giving it a good workout this week on holiday, really impressed, so much so I might sell the EM 5!!
