I haven't posted much in the way of this forum but I wanted to post about my car and the story that goes along with it as it may inspire some people. Please note I'm now 20 years old.

I grew up with an absolute love for cars, I went to the Welsh rally when I was 2 and ever since then you haven't seen me without a car magazine out of sight.

I guess I got the addiction form my dad and then furthermore his dad. My dad had a MG NG TC kit car when I was young and even though it wasn't looked after at all it made me happy! My grandad had a Porsche and this is where I believe I got my love for Porsche. He had a rather basic 924. It was (Believe it or not) a company car. The company then decided to stop companies cars all together and so the employees would need to buy their own cars under an allowance. My grandad opted for a 944, a yellow one and order it new from factory. However when it came to delivery the car was cancelled (I believe my grandad swallowed the deposit and went for a more practical option).

In this time he had moved up to the highlands and left his job to work for another company.

Cycling forward a few years, it was time to think about learning how to drive. I got a job at 16. I didn't want to rely on handouts. So I worked in a supermarket whilst at college, to support the dream. I paid rent, driving lessons and all the other bits in life. At age 17 I pass my test, and I got myself like all teenagers do a no power supermini. A lovely Seat Mii. It was great little car.

After 1 accident in it, because to be honest, I wasn't the greatest of driver in my first year (bit of a hooligan) I settled down. I had a particular rough year when I was 18 and I decided to surprise myself with a 1.8 NA MX5. A rear wheel drive sports car. At 18 I couldn't insure this beast. But that didn't stop me from not taking it onto the track. My closest track is either brands hatch or Lydden hill. At 19 I decided to insure the mx5. So I insured two cars, plus paid car tax and fuel by myself. I was in a different job now to do with accountancy so my wage had increased and I was working full time.

This year in April I decided to look around for a new daily. I got very distracted. Very distracted. I have a friend who is in his late 60s. Dad's friend and he has an immaculate 1979 911 and a 986 S. I checked the insurance of the 986 as a laugh because I wanted to see if I could even get a quote. However I got the year wrong and typed in a quote for a 987 S. This quote was so good and I couldn't believe my eyes. I could insure it for less than the total of the Seat and the Mazda together. When I realized my mistake I was already thinking about buying the 986 S. However the insurance was ridiculous.

So this is what made me search for 987s. I had a good look around and I bought a late 2005 model as that's all I could afford. It's been my daily for 6 months now.

I've done:

Reconditioned the Gearbox
New Clutch
New Flywheel
Major service and inspection
Brembo Brakes and Pads all round
New Tyres
RH 19" 964 Wheels

Hope this inspires you, especially if your young to go for your dream car, it's more achievable than you think sometimes. I can give more information about running costs and the expenses above if this post gets any attention.

Apologies if this post has poor grammar or spelling, it's not my forte.

Thank you very much. I did the wheels and tyres, brakes and other little odd jobs. I decided to document the gearbox recondition and the flywheel and clutch. The service was with a Porsche specialist local to me.

I forgot to mention how much I have loved watching and following Porsche in racing which I can go into further if you wish. I never thought I would be able to afford this car so soon.

Congratulations of the car, it looks lovely.

It's also good to see another accountant who is a petrolhead! It's always amusing when clients are shocked when I turn up to meetings in a noisy V8 (Monaro) or a Mini with no back seats (GP)! They assume all accountants drive Skoda diesels....

Well done. Good work tracking your MX-5 too.

Would you get more enjoyment from your driving and lower the insurance premiums by taking the IAM or RoSPA advanced tests?

Oh how I laugh as well. My boss has a Micra, and moans about the economy of it!

Accountants are sometimes more interesting than you think wink

Thank you, I wouldn't have learnt how to be a sensible driver if it wasn't for the track. It gets out a lot of boy racing intelligance that makes you take far fewer risks of the road.

Yes I am currently looking to do a course. I might do it with my dad as he's just gone and got himself 3 points! aha See where I get it from.

I would also like to do my race license, but I want to build up experience before doing that!

Great looking car, much prettier (and better sounding) than the new ones. Those wheels suit it well too
